FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Passengers arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Saturday were shocked to discover that Spirit Airlines had ceased operations overnight. Many learned this unsettling news as they were being offloaded to non-existent flights.
Ricardo Tejeda, a traveler, arrived at the airport only to realize that there were no available flights. By that time, thousands of Spirit Airlines flights had been canceled without prior notice. Travelers found themselves stranded, with empty check-in counters and customer service lines that were unreachable, leaving many confused and without warning.
Refunds Expected, But Delays Likely
In an official announcement, Spirit Airlines confirmed that the closure was effective immediately and advised passengers against heading to the airport. The airline stated that refunds would automatically be issued for tickets bought directly with credit or debit cards. However, those who booked through third-party platforms would need to reach out to their travel agents for resolution.
As for travelers who utilized vouchers, credits, or loyalty points, the fate of their compensation will be determined during the bankruptcy proceedings, complicating the situation further.
Loyalty Points Could Lose Value
Travel expert Clint Henderson emphasized that Spirit Airlines customers may face a substantial loss regarding their loyalty points, which could effectively render them worthless. He noted that passengers could file for bankruptcy but warned that those with loyalty points may find themselves at the end of the line when it comes to repayment.
To navigate these challenges, Henderson suggested that customers dispute charges with their credit card companies for services not rendered. He urged travelers to act promptly and consider booking their flights well in advance to secure better pricing, given the rising costs in the airline industry.
With airlines increasing fees, adding fuel surcharges, and reducing available seats on international and domestic routes, Henderson mentioned that competition for fewer seats could further drive up prices this summer.
Potential Increase in Airfares
Katie Nastro from Going.com lamented the impact Spirit Airlines’ closure will have on airfares along the airline’s popular routes, potentially causing price hikes of over 15%. Destinations such as Orlando and Las Vegas, which are heavily trafficked by Spirit Airlines, could see the most immediate price increases.
Nastro also noted that low-cost carriers have traditionally kept airfares low by competing vigorously with their larger counterparts. With Spirit’s exit, the competitive landscape might shift, making it easier for larger airlines to raise prices.
Airline Responses to the Disruption
In response to Spirit’s abrupt shutdown, several airlines and travel companies have stepped in to assist affected passengers. United Airlines announced plans to offer capped “rescue fares” for stranded travelers, pricing most tickets around $199, while American Airlines is considering increasing its capacity and reducing fares on routes shared with Spirit.
Additionally, low-cost airline Avero Airways is promoting significant discounts to attract those left stranded, whereas Hertz has introduced one-way car rental options for travelers needing to reach their final destinations.
Passengers Encounter Unexpected Disruption
Many passengers were entirely unprepared for the sudden closure. Tejeda, who had traveled to South Florida for medical appointments, was blindsided by the lack of available flights just after returning his rental car. Similarly, Angela Moreno discovered her flight to Nashville for a family wedding had been canceled just hours before departure, with replacement tickets from other airlines costing as much as $600.
Leonard Strobel, a freelance chef, faced hours of uncertainty as he sought reassurance about his scheduled flights. After eventually learning his flights had been canceled, he found himself contemplating a lengthy drive instead.
The fallout wasn’t limited to travelers, as many airline employees found their livelihoods at stake. Alexis Sharps Watson, a former flight attendant, described the situation as devastating for her colleagues, many of whom relied on their paychecks for survival. The union representing Spirit’s approximately 8,500 employees is now advocating for fair compensation and support from both the company and government entities.
