AUSTIN, Texas — The family of a man fatally shot during a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in the Houston area is urging for transparency, as Democratic leaders and immigration advocates voice their concerns about the incident.
On Wednesday, the shooting became a focal point in Austin, where local residents, faith leaders, and advocacy groups gathered outside the Travis County Commissioners Court to express their worries regarding immigration enforcement in Central Texas.
The Department of Homeland Security reported that ICE agents attempted to apprehend 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on Tuesday. According to the DHS, Salgado Araujo ignored commands and allegedly attempted to drive his vehicle towards the officers, prompting them to fire in self-defense.
However, Salgado Araujo’s family contests this version of events. In a speech delivered during the Austin rally, his eldest son, Ronaldo Salgado, characterized his father as a dedicated family man.
“My father was a simple man, a family man, and a routine man. He dedicated his life to the United States to give his family the American dream,” he stated, emphasizing that his father was in the process of obtaining legal status.
Ronaldo noted, “We had dotted all the I’s, crossed all the T’s, filled out all the paperwork, and attended all the appointments. He was close to getting legal status.”
At the rally, participants argued that ICE enforcement actions have surged in Central Texas, urging local elected officials to enhance protections for immigrant communities. They highlighted the Houston shooting as a critical example necessitating increased transparency in enforcement practices.
Alejandro Caceres from the Austin Sanctuary Network observed a rise in ICE operations, stating, “Over the past week, we have seen an escalation by ICE in our neighborhoods. Their presence has increased, and their tactics have become more aggressive.”
He added that many immigrant families now live in fear due to recent enforcement initiatives. “No matter your status—whether you possess a driver’s license, hold a work permit, or are in the asylum process—there’s a pervasive fear of being picked up by ICE,” Caceres remarked.
In response to the shooting, Democratic leaders are demanding an independent investigation. Representative Sylvia Garcia emphasized the need for a comprehensive and transparent inquiry, asserting, “We need a thorough investigation, which is why we have been advocating for real reform of ICE.”
The Texas Democratic Party has also called on federal authorities to release all pertinent evidence before drawing any conclusions about the incident.
On the other side, Republican leaders continue to tout Texas’ rigorous border security measures. At a recent Texas Republican Party convention, Governor Greg Abbott stated, “Texas has done more to protect our borders than any other state in American history. We are the only state to build our own border wall.”
In a related development, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Wednesday that her government is preparing legal action in response to the shooting. CBS Austin reached out to the Mexican Consulate General in Austin for comments but had not received a response by Wednesday evening.
