Four Police Officers Arrested for Alleged Extortion in Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested four officers on charges of extorting ₦53,000 from Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC), during an unlawful search operation in Abuja.
Police Commissioner Addresses the Incident
CP Ahmed Sanusi, the FCT Police Commissioner, spoke to reporters in Abuja on Monday, branding the officers as “criminals” whose actions have tarnished the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force. He emphasized that their misconduct not only violated police protocols but also harmed public trust.
Details of the Alleged Offense
According to Sanusi, the officers left their official assignments and gathered in the Vanex area of Ouse, where they unlawfully established checkpoints. They targeted unsuspecting motorists, including Aliyu, whose identity was unknown to them at the time of the incident.
Extortion Tactics Revealed
Sanusi reported that the officers coerced Aliyu into withdrawing ₦53,000 through a point-of-sale (POS) terminal, insisting he cover the transaction fees. The money was subsequently divided among the officers involved.
Investigation and Arrest of Suspects
A preliminary investigation indicated that these officers had abandoned their designated duties to form an extortion group operating illegal checkpoints. Following a confession from the group’s leader, police quickly tracked down and apprehended the remaining suspects.

Sanusi reiterated the Inspector General of Police’s edict against indiscriminate searches of citizens’ mobile phones and warned officers against violating citizens’ rights. He urged residents to report any cases of extortion or police misconduct, assuring that disciplinary measures would be enforced against those found guilty.
