Three Arrested in Connection with Brutal Hazing Incident at Florida College
A Florida Secret Service agent and two accomplices were arrested following a harrowing multi-day hazing ritual at a college that nearly resulted in a death, officials confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Arrests and Charges
Marquez Christopher Pinder, 29, who has been placed on administrative leave, is one of the suspects involved. The Secret Service is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation, as stated by Michael Townsend, the special agent in charge of the agency’s Miami field office.
Hazing Charges and Allegations
Pinder, alongside Jared Lamar James, 26, and Elijah Delano Deius, 29, faces serious charges which include attempted manslaughter with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and hazing involving a deadly weapon, as outlined by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office. At the time of the alleged hazing, Pinder served as the “pledge president” of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity at the University of Miami in Coral Gables.
Victims of the Assault
The two victims, referred to as Victim 1 and Victim 2, allegedly endured severe assaults during the incident. Arrest warrants prepared by Sweetwater Police Detective Kevin Espinosa and Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Detective Alejandro Venturin indicated that the victims were “severely assaulted” throughout the ordeal.
Extent of the Hazing Incidents
The investigation revealed that the hazing included repeated beatings with canes and paddles over several days. Prosecutors highlighted that failure to correctly answer questions about fraternity history reportedly triggered the violence. The incidents began on April 1 inside an apartment in Sweetwater, Florida, and continued over the following days.
Victim Injuries and Medical Attention
Victim 1 required extensive skin grafting to treat severe injuries on his back, described as “blackened due to the presence of necrotic skin/tissue” from the assaults. The victim continues to experience extreme pain and discomfort, with significant impacts on mobility and overall quality of life. According to the warrant, if Victim 1 had not received prompt medical care, these injuries could have led to renal failure and potentially death.
Statements from Victim 2 and Legal Representation
Victim 2 claimed he was not subjected to hazing but sought medical attention in April for injuries to his buttocks. Despite his denial of hazing, the arrest warrant indicates that his injuries were consistent with physical abuse similar to Victim 1’s. All three suspects were apprehended on Monday, though it’s currently unclear whether they have secured legal representation.
Prosecutor’s Comments on Hazing Culture
In a statement, State’s Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle emphasized that hazing, often perceived as a tradition fostering camaraderie, constitutes criminal acts against individuals who suffer deeply as a result. She underscored the seriousness of the allegations, noting that such traditions can lead to devastating consequences.
