Federal Government Transfers Enugu Airport Management to Aero Alliance
The Federal Government has officially transferred the management and operation of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu to Aero Alliance Limited through a public-private partnership agreement. This marks the culmination of years of unsuccessful efforts to grant a concession for the airport facility.
The signing ceremony, which took place on Thursday, was attended by various government officials, aviation regulators, representatives from the concessionaire, and Enugu State Governor Peter Mba.
Milestone in Aviation Sector Modernization
During the event, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo described this development as a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing initiatives to modernize Nigeria’s airport infrastructure and attract private investment to the aviation sector. Keyamo highlighted that the airport concession plan had been in discussion for nearly two decades but was only realized under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Shifting Focus to Regional Airports
Keyamo pointed out that, traditionally, investors have concentrated their efforts on airports in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano, while showing little interest in facilities in Enugu and Port Harcourt. He expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Today, we have successfully conceded Enugu, and Port Harcourt will also be handed over in the coming weeks.”
Investor Interest Following Concession Success
The successful conclusion of the Enugu airport concession has already attracted interest from new investors, with bids being prepared for other airports nationwide. Keyamo commended Governor Mba for his pivotal role in advancing the initiative, referring to him as an essential partner in the project. “Governor Peter Mba came to court with a clear plan. He brought investors to the table, and we found him to be the perfect partner for this project,” he remarked.
Commitment to Employee Welfare
In discussing workforce concerns, Keyamo assured airport employees that their welfare would be safeguarded under the new arrangement. He noted that while airline unions had initially opposed the concession program and pursued legal challenges, they later withdrew their case after reaching an agreement with government officials. “We want to assure our workers that they are protected, but it will no longer be business as usual,” he stated. The airport will now be privately managed with an emphasis on efficiency, accountability, and service delivery.
New Cargo Route to Enhance Trade
In addition to passenger services, Minister Keyamo announced that the Enugu State government had signed a memorandum of understanding to create a direct cargo route linking Enugu to Guangzhou, China. This proposed connectivity is poised to enhance trade, logistics, and investment opportunities within the South East region. Governor Mba described the concession as a transformative initiative aligned with his administration’s vision to position Enugu as a key aviation, logistics, and investment hub in West Africa.
Long-term Growth Expectations in Aviation
The concession process gained momentum in July 2025 when the Federal Executive Committee approved a comprehensive business case for the airport concession, culminating in the signing of the agreement in January 2026. Under this arrangement, Aero Alliance Limited will manage, operate, and renovate the airport, while ownership remains with the federal government. Officials anticipate that this partnership will significantly enhance the passenger experience, attract investment, and support the long-term growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
