Alonso Plans to Decide Formula 1 Future After Summer Break
Fernando Alonso is set to announce his decision regarding the future of his Formula 1 career after the summer break in August. The two-time world champion, who will turn 45 in July, is contemplating extending his illustrious career to a remarkable 24 seasons by 2027. Currently, he is in the final year of his contract with Aston Martin, having made the switch from Alpine in 2023.
Reflecting on Racing After a Challenging Start
Despite a rocky outset for Aston Martin and engine supplier Honda under the new regulations this season, Alonso has expressed that he is not ready to call it quits just yet. “I don’t feel the time is right at the moment,” he noted, affirming his commitment to competing at the highest level of motorsport.
Timing His Decision Around Upcoming Races
When asked about his schedule for the upcoming Miami Grand Prix, Alonso stated, “I need to make a decision sometime in the summer.” He acknowledged the importance of discussing his future with his family before concluding his plans for next year. “I’m very relaxed. If I continue racing, I believe I can achieve even better results in my second year with this project,” he added.
Optimism for Improvement and Team Success
Alonso emphasized his ongoing connection to Aston Martin and his dedication to the team, regardless of whether he remains behind the wheel or not. “I want to be successful here, whether I’m driving or supporting from the sidelines,” he stated. His consistent performance has solidified his role as the lead driver, outpacing teammate Lance Stroll with 40 consecutive Grand Prix appearances. He conveyed optimism that if the car becomes more competitive, he and the team can deliver solid results.
Fatherhood Influences Racing Aspirations
In March, Alonso welcomed his first child with partner Melissa Jimenez, prompting him to reflect on how fatherhood shapes his racing ambitions. Speaking candidly, he shared, “I want to race so he can watch me race. But it’s probably going to take a few years before he realizes what’s going on.” He expressed a desire to remain in the sport until his son can appreciate his legacy as a driver.
Retiring on His Own Terms Remains a Priority
As he considers retirement, Alonso emphasizes the importance of stepping back before he feels a decline in his competitive spirit. “It’s not ideal to leave the sport on a low note,” he said, sharing that he feels content with his career thus far. “I want to leave when I still feel capable, not when I start losing my edge,” he explained.
Exploring Opportunities Beyond F1
Reflecting on his post-F1 career, Alonso expressed an interest in exploring various racing endeavors, mentioning the potential of participating in events like the Dakar Rally or returning to Le Mans. “I’m not fixated on when I leave F1; I plan to keep racing in some capacity,” he reassured fans. With the Canadian Grand Prix approaching, Alonso remains focused and determined to finish the season strong as he assesses his next steps on the track.
