Governor Peter Mba emphasized the transformative potential of the recent airport concession, identifying it as a landmark achievement for the Southeast region. This initiative opens the door to new economic opportunities, positioning the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA) to become a key player in aviation, logistics, and commerce across Africa.
Aero Alliance Outlines Ambitious Plans for AIIA
The Federal Government has officially transferred control of AIIA in Enugu to Aero Alliance Limited, as part of a public-private partnership agreement. Following the completion of necessary documentation, Aero Alliance is set to oversee the financing, rehabilitation, expansion, and management of the airport, ensuring adherence to international safety and efficiency standards.
Commemorating a Historic Concession
During the handover ceremony at AIIA’s International Terminal, Federal Minister of Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo praised the efforts of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Mba, crediting them for reviving a project that had stalled for many years. Keyamo remarked on the historical significance of the concession, noting that previous administrations struggled to attract bidders for Enugu and Port Harcourt airports, while major cities like Lagos and Abuja attracted the majority of interest.

Keyamo also addressed concerns regarding job security, assuring that the agreement with Aero Alliance is designed to generate new employment opportunities rather than eliminate existing roles. He highlighted the consortium’s obligation to uphold the highest standards of operational excellence, professionalism, and safety.

In his remarks, Jobson Ewalefor, Director-General of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, commended the concession as a pivotal moment for Nigeria. Ewalefor highlighted that the agreement facilitating Enugu Air’s connection to Guangzhou represents a significant step toward enhancing the airport’s viability.
