Fidelity Bank Chairman to Be Honored as Woman of the Year
Amaka Onwugal, the esteemed Chairman of Fidelity Bank, will be celebrated as the Woman of the Year at the 5th Anambra Man of the Year (AMTY) Awards. This recognition highlights her significant contributions to the Nigerian banking sector, corporate governance, and leadership.

Chairman of the AMTY Planning Committee, Senior Professor Adaoma Igwedibya, announced the honor, noting that it acknowledges Onwugal’s formidable career, which spans over three decades and has greatly impacted Nigeria’s financial services landscape.

Igwedibya emphasized that Onwugal’s career embodies excellence, integrity, and resilience. He remarked that she is one of the few Nigerian bankers who has ascended through nearly every level of the industry, ultimately becoming the president of a commercial bank.
Pioneering Leadership in the Banking Sector
Onwugal made history as the first female Chair of Fidelity Bank’s Board of Directors, providing strategic guidance that has strengthened the bank’s governance and fostered long-term growth. Igwedibya also pointed out her groundbreaking achievements, such as becoming the first female managing director from Anambra State when she took the helm at Main Street Bank in 2014, further solidifying her status among Nigeria’s top financial executives.
Diverse Experience and Current Role
Prior to her current position, Onwugal held notable roles throughout her career, including Deputy Managing Director at Skye Bank Plc. In this capacity, she was instrumental in overseeing corporate banking, treasury operations, structured finance, and international funding. Additionally, she briefly served as Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Reliance Bank Limited in 2005, showcasing her versatility and leadership in the banking sector.
Educational Background and Professional Affiliations
Onwugal’s academic credentials bolster her professional achievements; she earned a degree in Economics from the University of Buckingham, an MBA from the University of Port Harcourt, and a Master’s in Corporate Governance from Leeds Metropolitan University. Furthermore, she has completed executive programs at prestigious institutions, including Harvard, Stanford, and Cambridge, among others. Onwugal is also a fellow and member of several professional organizations, including the Chartered Bankers Association of Nigeria and the Institute of Directors.
