Jamie Raskin, the leading Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has initiated an investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino, focusing on the soccer governing body’s connections to the Trump administration. Raskin’s inquiry seeks detailed documents regarding gifts, payments, and benefits bestowed upon Trump and his associates, as well as visitor logs for FIFA’s office located in Trump Tower, established last year. The Committee has also requested Infantino’s participation in a transcribed interview.
Heightened Scrutiny Ahead of Summer World Cup
The relationship between Infantino and Trump is attracting significant attention as the summer World Cup approaches. Last December, during the World Cup draw in Washington, Trump received the newly created FIFA Peace Prize at the Kennedy Center. However, reports indicate that renovations were made “on short notice” under the Trump administration’s direction in anticipation of the tournament. FIFA opened its office in Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan in July.
Political Controversies Escalate During the Tournament
The scrutiny of this relationship intensified during the World Cup, particularly when Trump approached Infantino multiple times regarding the suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun. While FIFA eventually overturned Balogun’s red card, the incident sparked criticism from various teams and associations worldwide, overshadowing the U.S. team’s performance.
Trump and Infantino Face Backlash at Trophy Ceremony
Following Spain’s victory over Argentina in the final, Trump joined Infantino on stage at the World Cup trophy ceremony alongside leaders from Canada and Mexico. Concerns Over FIFA’s Ethical Standards
Raskin’s letter highlights the Justice Department’s decision to drop charges related to a widespread investigation into corruption within world soccer, which culminated in the 2015 indictment of over 20 senior FIFA officials and sports marketing executives. Raskin expressed concern that Infantino’s tenure has eroded FIFA’s ethical framework, calling his actions a form of “legal bribery” as described by legal experts.

The letter also raises issues surrounding FIFA World Cup ticket sales policies, which have already drawn inquiries from multiple U.S. attorneys general. The dynamic pricing approach led to criticism during the tournament, as it resulted in significant price gouging, effectively barring many fans from attending games.

Raskin’s letter sets an Aug. 9 deadline for Infantino to provide the requested documents and arrange an interview. Given the Democratic minority in the House, Raskin may require Republican support to compel Infantino’s attendance.

Exchanges between FIFA and the U.S. government are expected to persist beyond the summer’s tournament, especially as the United States prepares to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup. Speculation also suggests that the U.S. may be a contender for the 2038 Men’s World Cup following this year’s successful event. FIFA has yet to comment on the ongoing investigation.
Infantino Responds to Public Criticism
In a 15-part message on Instagram, Infantino accused his critics of spreading hatred and misinformation, while declaring the World Cup a success. Although more than 200 FIFA members have shown their support for Infantino ahead of the upcoming presidential election in March, some associations, like the Norwegian Football Federation, are planning to file formal complaints regarding Trump’s involvement in the decision to reverse Balogun’s suspension.
