House Speaker Addresses Domestic Violence Allegations Against Ohio Republican
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) commented on Friday regarding domestic violence allegations brought against Rep. Max Miller by his ex-wife. Johnson emphasized the need for resolution in the matter, stating, “He has to resolve it.”
Complicated Circumstances for Republicans
This situation presents a challenge for Republican leaders. Miller, who is currently serving his second term in the House, is embroiled in a contentious divorce with his ex-wife, Emily Moreno—a daughter of Ohio Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno. Miller has firmly denied the allegations and is pursuing a defamation lawsuit.
Miller’s Response to the Accusations
In response to the allegations, Miller took to social media to express, “The false allegations against me are in the midst of a personal custody dispute and are simply an attempt to tarnish my personal and professional reputation. I look forward to uncovering the truth in court.” His marriage to Emily Moreno, a supporter of Donald Trump, took place in 2022, and the couple welcomed a daughter in 2023 before finalizing their divorce in June.
Domestic Violence Allegations Surface
Earlier this month, the Daily Mail reported on domestic violence allegations from Moreno, including photographs of injuries purportedly inflicted by Miller. This development adds strain to their already tumultuous relationship.
Escalating Legal Battles
Complications heightened on Wednesday when Miller filed a defamation lawsuit against Moreno in Cleveland. He claimed that her accusations have caused him “substantial reputational and financial harm,” as reported by the Associated Press. Miller is running for reelection this November and alleges that both Moreno and her attorney, Andrew Zashin, intentionally propagated false information to various media outlets.
Public Relations Statements
Emily Moreno’s publicist, Stephen Mischagiliu, accused Miller of attempting to silence her, stating, “Mr. Miller is upset because he is trying to silence Emily Moreno… and Emily will not allow that.” He added that Miller has a pattern of using intimidation tactics. This mirrors previous allegations made against Miller by Stephanie Grisham, the former White House press secretary, who also accused him of domestic violence during their dating relationship. Grisham’s lawsuit against Miller was dismissed in 2023.
Investigation into Child Abuse Allegations
Allegations of domestic abuse coinciding with claims of child abuse surfaced in Moreno’s divorce filings earlier this year, yet these claims have seemingly not affected Miller’s standing with Trump. The former president endorsed Miller for reelection on May 5, touting his military service and loyalty. An incident report from the Bay Village Police Department indicated that on February 23, a child protection specialist alerted police regarding suspected child abuse at Miller’s home. Police acknowledged that the investigation is ongoing but provided no further details. Miller’s attorney stated that the state found no evidence of child abuse or neglect against him.
