Nigerian First Lady Inaugurates Major ICT Facility at Ekiti State University
In a significant move to advance Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape toward a digital economy, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, officially opened the N1 billion Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Experience Center at Ekiti State University (EKSU) in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday. She hailed the center as a pivotal investment aimed at fostering innovation, artificial intelligence, and essential skills for Nigeria’s youth.
The ICT Experience Center, a collaborative effort under the Renewed Hope Initiative and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), is designed to enhance digital learning, encourage research, and promote technology-driven education within the university.
At the inauguration ceremony, Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that this initiative is part of the wider educational reforms spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. She highlighted the importance of preparing young Nigerians for a global landscape increasingly shaped by technological advancements and artificial intelligence.
The ICT Experience Center aims to equip students with state-of-the-art digital tools and learning platforms that can enhance their academic performance, spur innovation, and foster entrepreneurial spirit. “This partnership with TETFund under the Renewed Hope Initiative seeks to provide educational opportunities and cultivate the necessary digital skills for the future,” she noted.
Moreover, the First Lady expressed her happiness to be in Ekiti State and reassured residents that further developmental initiatives in agriculture, healthcare, and economic empowerment are forthcoming.
The event was graced by numerous dignitaries, including Vice President Hajia Nana Shettima, Minister of Women’s Affairs Iman Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Senate Majority Leader Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, Ekiti State Governor Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebunji, and other government officials and political figures.
Professor Joseph Babatola Ayodele, Vice-Chancellor of EKSU, praised the ICT Experience Center as a transformative intervention that will greatly enhance teaching, learning, research, and innovation within the university. He categorized the facility as a critical step for the institution to align with global technological trends and broaden opportunities for students and researchers.
TETFund representative Hon. Sunday Adepoju elaborated on the project details, revealing that EKSU is one of six universities selected from across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones to benefit from the 2024 ICT Experience Center initiative. He detailed that the center, valued at over NOK 1 billion, boasts advanced digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence tools designed to enrich student exposure to emerging technologies, thus bolstering their competitiveness in the global knowledge economy.
Mr. Adepoju reiterated TETFund’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s agenda for modernizing higher education through technology-driven initiatives. Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, EKSU Rector, also commended the First Lady for facilitating this pioneering initiative, describing it as a transformative intervention that promises to benefit generations of students.
