Launch of Black African History Global Iconic Awards Promotes African Excellence
Ambassador Lovesupatra Ekufu, a notable figure in the Nigerian kickboxing and MMA scene, has unveiled the inaugural Black African History Global Iconic Awards (BAHGIA). This initiative aims to celebrate and recognize the myriad achievements of black Africans and people of African descent globally, fostering a sense of unity and inspiring the continent’s youth.
A Celebration of Achievements
Scheduled for July 5 at the Marriott Hotel in GRA Ikeja, Lagos, the awards ceremony seeks to highlight those contributions that often go unacknowledged. “Despite their significant impact, black individuals worldwide remain underrepresented. This award is a step toward celebrating that excellence and bringing deserving personalities into the spotlight,” Ekufu explained.
The Importance of Collaboration
Ekufu commended the organizational team for their dedication to making this vision a reality. She emphasized that collective effort is essential, stating, “Trees cannot make a forest; it takes a dedicated team to breathe life into such a vision.” The awards will spotlight outstanding individuals in various fields, including sports, politics, business, education, arts, entertainment, and community development.
A Multifaceted Event Experience
The event promises a blend of a daytime conference and a gala evening, celebrating winners across more than 20 categories. Attendees can expect impressive performances and presentations from distinguished guests from Africa and its diaspora, reflecting the event’s emphasis on cultural richness and achievement.
Collaborative Efforts for Success
BAHGIA’s Vice Chairman, Charles Ezerime, noted that the organizers have partnered with key government bodies, including the National Sports Commission and the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, to ensure a successful event. Promoting unity among Africans and people of African descent is a core goal of this initiative. “By gathering individuals under one umbrella, regardless of their backgrounds, we can convey a powerful message of unity,” Ezerime stated.
Sport as a Unifying Force
Chief Strategist Olisa Chukwuma underscored the role of sports in shaping this initiative, pointing to Ekufu’s background as a celebrated kickboxing champion. “Sports are integral to our vision. The founders’ backgrounds in athletics have fundamentally influenced our approach, aligning sports, entertainment, and youth development,” he remarked.
Empowering the Next Generation
Director Francis Emeka expressed the initiative’s goal of motivating young people to value education and uphold positive principles at a time when many seem disillusioned by formal learning paths. “We encourage corporate organizations and governmental bodies to support this initiative; its impacts on youth will be profound,” Emeka said. The conference will tackle pressing issues facing African youth, focusing on insecurity and the undervaluing of education.
Lagos: A Cultural Epicenter
Pauline Christian, president of the Canada-based Martin Luther King Awards, highlighted Lagos as the ideal venue due to its cultural significance and influence across Africa. “Lagos epitomizes Africa’s creative pulse and entrepreneurial spirit, and it deserves to be at the forefront of the global discourse on African excellence,” she asserted. The event aims to bridge connections between Africa and the diaspora, celebrating a shared heritage and striving for a collective future.
With high expectations, organizers are confident that the first edition of the Black African History Global Iconic Awards will establish a benchmark for celebrating black excellence and nurturing collaboration among black communities worldwide.
