Nigeria Strengthens Basketball Aspirations Ahead of 2028 Olympics
Nigeria’s quest to build a formidable basketball team for the 2028 Summer Olympics has gained significant momentum, with four NBA players expressing interest in joining the DeTigers under the leadership of newly appointed head coach David Fizdale, according to Punch Sports Extra.
Fizdale’s Strategic Appointment and Background
David Fizdale, a former head coach for the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, recently transitioned from an assistant role with the Phoenix Suns (2023-2025) to lead Nigeria’s men’s national basketball team. His appointment is seen as a pivotal move to enhance Nigeria’s competitive edge on the international stage.
Aaron Nesmith Leads the Charge
Basketball journalist and scout Coach Hoba announced that Indiana Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith has committed to representing Nigeria in upcoming international competitions. Hoba confirmed the news via X, stating that a reliable source close to Nesmith had reported the player’s dedication to the DeTigers.
Desmond Bain Joins the Movement
Hoba further disclosed that Desmond Bain, an emerging star in the NBA, is actively working on his international transfer to join Nigeria’s Olympic squad. Bain has previously articulated his desire to help Nigeria compete at a high level, emphasizing the need for collective efforts among players of Nigerian descent.
Interest from Onyeka Okongwu
In addition to Nesmith and Bain, journalist Kehinde Bamidele reported that Atlanta Hawks center Onyeka Okongwu has also shown keen interest in joining Fizdale’s team. Although Okongwu missed out on a potential invitation due to short notice, discussions are ongoing for an upcoming international window set for July.
Ayo Dosunmu’s Potential Commitment
Meanwhile, there is still uncertainty surrounding Ayo Dosunmu’s commitment to the DeTigers. Bamidele noted that while the coaching staff is eager to recruit him, Dosunmu has yet to make a definitive decision. Having previously represented the United States at the youth level, including a gold medal win at the 2018 FIBA U18 Americas Championship, his transition to the Nigerian team may require additional formalities.
Fizdale’s Vision for Nigeria’s Olympic Journey
Fizdale shared his ambitious vision for the DeTigers, aiming to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Following his appointment, he expressed to ESPN that leading Nigeria to compete in the Olympics in his home country would be the pinnacle of his career. Historically, Nigeria has participated in the London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but the team is now focused on achieving its first basketball medal on the world stage.
