Federal Executive Committee Approves NYSC Transformation
The Federal Executive Committee has approved a significant plan to transform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) into a civilian-led agency, emphasizing skill acquisition in 11 essential areas, including technology entrepreneurship and health services. This decision was announced on Monday following a council meeting led by President Bola Tinubu at the state house.
Revised Structure to Align with Economic Goals
Hadiza Bala Usman, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Implementation, indicated that these changes will encompass a broad range of structural modifications. This initiative aims to align the NYSC with the national objective of developing a $1 trillion economy.
Introduction of Eleven Core Training Streams
Explaining the new operating model, Bala Usman outlined that the NYSC will now offer 11 dedicated training streams for corps members. These streams include agriculture, medicine, education, technology and digital skills, legal services, public service, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, enterprise development, the creative economy, and paramilitary and security operations.
Focus on Human Capital Development
These reforms represent a strategic government intervention aimed at enhancing human capital development. The NYSC will transition to a privately-led agency that prioritizes skill development and workforce productivity, empowering youth in the process. This move is designed to meet national development objectives more effectively.
Overhaul of the Orientation Camp Experience
The proposed reforms will alter the entire NYSC experience, particularly in the areas of rollout and registration. A complete revision of the Orientation Camp timeline has been established. This new structure aims to provide a robust foundation for civic responsibility and personal development.
New Structure for Orientation Activities
Bala Usman outlined that the Orientation Camp will now feature a two-week foundation phase focused on civic duty, national values, and leadership development. Following this, a second two-week segment will encompass career mapping, basic accounting, literacy skills, business planning, and access to finance.
Customized Training and Career Development
To ensure corps members can directly engage with potential employers, a structured career day program will be introduced. The final two weeks of the orientation will focus on specialized training tailored to each corps member’s chosen stream. This approach will ensure that training aligns with their educational background and skill profile, enabling better preparation for their future careers.
