Hospital Management Responds to Worker Strike in Ondo State
The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Akure Teaching Hospital in Ondo State has expressed disapproval regarding the industrial action initiated by workers at the facility. This strike was launched by the hospital chapter of the Nigerian Union of Medical Professions, which is advocating for the withdrawal of the hospital’s organ chart and the establishment of a separate clinical laboratory services department.
Union’s Demands and Concerns
The union’s grievances also encompass the recent appointment of two vice-chairmen to the hospital’s medical advisory committee, specifically for clinical and diagnostic services. These concerns have contributed significantly to the decision to strike.
Accusations of Illegality
In a statement released on Thursday by Tope Fayhun, the head of communications at the hospital, management declared the ongoing strike by members of the National Association of Public Health (NUAHP) illegal. The statement emphasized that despite the union’s protest, the hospital remains committed to ensuring quality healthcare for the public at federally owned facilities.
Impact on Patient Care
The management reassured patients, stakeholders, and the public that ensuring patient well-being and continuity of care remains a paramount priority. However, the statement revealed that the strike has significantly disrupted routine and emergency diagnostic services, resulting in delays in clinical decision-making. Consequently, some patients have opted to seek tests from external laboratories, incurring additional financial and logistical challenges.
New Measures to Minimize Disruption
Management expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the illegal strike and is proactively taking measures to mitigate the disruption of medical services throughout the facility. All administrative decisions made during this period, the hospital noted, were executed in accordance with existing public service regulations and relevant government circulars aimed at enhancing the organization’s governance and operational efficiency.
Previous Resolutions and Ongoing Commitments
The hospital also highlighted that previous negotiations between management and trade union representatives led to 23 mutually agreed resolutions intended to foster professional harmony and improve healthcare outcomes. These resolutions remain in effect and are available for reference and implementation as needed.
Security and Safety Protocols
Furthermore, the management reaffirmed that its directive requiring staff to surrender office and access keys to security during the strike is not punitive. This measure is rooted in a long-standing administrative and security protocol established by previous governance and upheld by current management. It aims to safeguard hospital facilities, protect sensitive medical equipment, and ensure accountability during service disruptions.
A Call for Patient-Centered Focus
In the concluding remarks of the statement, management urged the NUAHP leadership to prioritize patient welfare while addressing their concerns. The hospital reassured that it is committed to maintaining essential health services through alternative arrangements and will continue to keep staff, patients, and the public informed of developments.
