Gas Explosion in Dallas Claims Three Lives
A gas explosion at an apartment complex in Dallas on Thursday afternoon resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals and left at least five others hospitalized, as confirmed by city officials.
Fire Breaks Out in Oak Cliff Neighborhood
The fire ignited in the Oak Cliff neighborhood shortly before 1 p.m., according to reports from Dallas Fire Rescue and Dallas Police. Initially categorized as a two-alarm fire, it quickly escalated to a five-alarm incident as crews responded to a report of a gas leak.
First Responders Encounter Explosion
Deputy Chief Mark D. Berry stated during an evening news conference that first responders were en route to address the gas leak when the explosion occurred. “First responders, we were on our way to a gas leak and then the explosion,” Berry noted.
Bodies Recovered from Rubbles
In the aftermath, three bodies were uncovered amid the debris of the complex. The deceased were identified as two women and a child, according to an evening update from Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans.
Hospitalizations and Missing Residents
Five individuals were reported hospitalized following the explosion. Three were admitted, one in critical but stable condition, while the others were either already discharged or expected to be released later that evening, Evans reported. Additionally, two others self-transported to the hospital with mild, non-life-threatening injuries.
Search and Recovery Efforts Intensified
Immediately following the incident, operations transitioned from rescue to recovery mode. “We will continue to search the building throughout the excavation process and will search throughout the night until every last foot and inch of the property has been searched,” Evans emphasized. He expressed the emotional weight of the situation, highlighting the concerns of first responders about the families affected.
Investigation into the Incident Underway
Initial reports indicated that a contractor conducting work on the building struck a gas line, leading to the explosion, as confirmed by NBC DFW. Atmos Energy, the natural gas distribution company that services the area, stated it received notification at 12:51 p.m. about the damaged pipeline near 409 East 9th Street. The company is assisting with the response, and natural gas supplies in the vicinity have been disrupted.
City Leaders Urge Community Support
At a news conference, Mayor Eric Johnson urged the community to support those affected by this tragic event, stating, “I want to encourage the entire city, the entire state, the entire country to come together and pray for all the people, all the families that are affected.” In light of the incident, the National Transportation Safety Board has announced plans to send a team to Dallas to investigate the explosion further.
