Gateway International Airport Commences International Operations with Hajj Flight
On Sunday night, Ogun State made a significant leap in Nigeria’s aviation landscape as the newly operational Gateway International Airport successfully handled its inaugural international flight. This historic event facilitated the airlift of Muslim pilgrims heading to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj exercise.
Ogun State Emerges as a Regional Aviation Hub
This milestone not only kicks off Hajj activities in the state but also reinforces Ogun’s emerging role in both regional and international air transport. It proudly stands as the primary launch point for Nigerian pilgrims participating in this year’s pilgrimage.
Successful Inaugural Flight Operations
The flight, operated by Max Air, took off from Iperu around 11 PM, carrying a total of 345 pilgrims—151 men and 194 women—alongside officials from the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board. The aircraft successfully landed at King Abdulaziz International Airport after an uninterrupted journey spanning approximately 4,600 kilometers, arriving around 4:15 AM Nigeria time.
Showcasing Large Aircraft Capabilities
Beyond the symbolic nature of the departure, the event was underscored by the successful operation of a large international aircraft, known as the largest passenger plane to have accessed the airport. This achievement underscores the facility’s capability to accommodate wide-body aircraft operations, enhancing its compliance with global aviation standards and long-haul international travel.
Quick Transition from Project to Reality
The airport was commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on April 4, 2026. Since then, it has swiftly transformed from an announced project into a fully functional international gateway.
Governor Abiodun Describes Flight as a Defining Moment
Before the departure, Governor Dapo Abiodun characterized this maiden flight as a pivotal moment in the state’s development journey. He emphasized that the significance of this event extends beyond the arrival and departure of an international aircraft, reflecting the focus, determination, and teamwork involved in bringing the project to fruition.
Pilgrims Urged to Uphold Nigeria’s Image
Governor Abiodun acknowledged the support from the Federal Government and commended the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria for designating the airport as a hub for Hajj activities. He urged pilgrims to maintain Nigeria’s reputation through discipline and respect during their stay in Saudi Arabia.
Streamlining Logistics for South-West Pilgrims
Ismail Yusuf, the Chairman of NAHCON, represented by Alhaji Olanrewaju Elegushi, remarked that the new departure point will significantly improve logistics for pilgrims in the South-West, eliminating the necessity for long-distance travel to other airports. He highlighted that Gateway International Airport is the first state-owned facility in the region granted unrestricted Hajj operations, credited to its modern infrastructure and adherence to international aviation standards.
Transformative Impact Celebrated by Community Leaders
Community leaders, including Mr. Olowu of Owu and Oba Saka Matemilola, recognized the transformative influence of the project, praising its capacity to alleviate the historical challenges of international travel through Lagos. The Amir Hajj 2026, Alhaji Shamsiddin Apelogun, reminded pilgrims of their representation of Ogun State and Nigeria, encouraging them to approach their pilgrimage responsibly.
Excitement Among Pilgrims
Dr. Muritala Ejalonib, speaking on behalf of the pilgrims, described the moment as historic. Many travelers expressed their excitement at being the first beneficiaries of this new international gateway.
Implications Beyond Hajj
The successful airlift of pilgrims not only signifies a key moment in the Hajj season but also underscores Ogun State’s strategic vision for the future. The inaugural international flight showcases the state’s commitment to becoming a central player in Nigeria’s aviation sector, paving the way for potential economic growth, investment opportunities, and enhanced global connectivity.
With this achievement, Ogun State has clearly transitioned from aspiration to action, solidifying its position within the Nigerian aviation industry.
