Political Support Essential to Combatting Crime
According to experts, strong political backing is vital in the battle against crime. Mr. Gbenga Olawepo Hashim, the Accord Party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, has praised Nigerian security agencies for the successful rescue of an abducted victim after 56 days of captivity in Oriile Local Government Area, Oyo State.
Demonstrating Capability of Security Forces
Hashim asserted that this operation exemplifies the ability of the nation’s security forces to dismantle criminal organizations when backed by consistent political support. In a statement released over the weekend, he described the rescue as a significant victory, claiming that Nigeria’s security issues arise more from a lack of sustained political direction than from military limitations. He expressed confidence in the Nigerian Defense Force’s capability, emphasizing the need for clear objectives and decisive political leadership.
Military’s Proven Track Record in Peacekeeping
The former presidential candidate highlighted the Nigerian military’s success in international peacekeeping missions, particularly in Liberia and Sierra Leone. During these efforts, the military operated under the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), playing a pivotal role in resolving prolonged conflicts and restoring stability.
A Model for Nationwide Campaigns Against Crime
Hashim believes the successful rescue mission in Oriile should serve as a blueprint for a coordinated national offensive against kidnappers, bandits, and violent criminal gangs plaguing communities throughout Nigeria. He stressed that the same determination exhibited in the Oriile rescue should extend to all areas where innocent citizens remain in captivity, including parts of Kwara, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Kebbi states. He argued that no family should endure suffering when the state has the capacity to intervene.
Call for Strategic Direction and Action
As co-chairman of the Movement for Democratic Renewal (MDR), Hashim urged the federal government to provide ongoing strategic direction and enhanced political backing for security agencies. He called for similar rescue operations across the nation until all kidnapped individuals are freed and the networks of organized crime are dismantled.
Integrated Strategy Needed to Combat Terrorism
He emphasized the importance of addressing all forms of terrorism in Nigeria through an integrated approach aimed at eradicating the ongoing war on terror. Hashim also commended the bravery, professionalism, and sacrifices of personnel in the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services (DSS). He noted that the successful operation significantly boosts public confidence in Nigeria’s security agencies.
Wishes for Victims’ Recovery
Hashim extended his congratulations to the rescued victims and their families, expressing hopes for their prompt physical, emotional, and spiritual recovery from the trauma of their 56-day ordeal.
