Ghana Appoints Carlos Queiroz as Head Coach for the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Ghana Football Association has officially named Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars, the senior national team. The seasoned manager, known for his previous roles with Real Madrid, Manchester United, and the Portugal and Iran national teams, is set to lead Ghana in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Immediate Responsibilities Ahead of the Tournament
Cueiroz, now 73, wasted no time in gearing up for the tournament. Ghana’s campaign will kick off in Group L against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field in Toronto, followed by matches against England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts and Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Short-Term Contract Structure
Sources within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) indicate that Queiroz’s appointment is structured as a short-term contract specifically for the World Cup, with plans for reassessment following the tournament. His hiring concludes a swift two-week search after the dismissal of former coach Otto Addo on March 30, which followed a disappointing 2-1 loss in a friendly match against Germany.
Queiroz’s Vision for the Team
In a statement released on the GFA website, Queiroz emphasized the deeper significance of his role, saying, “This is more than just a job, it’s a mission.” He articulated his commitment to leveraging his extensive experience for the betterment of both the game and the players.
A Competitive Selection Process
The GFA’s decision to hire Queiroz came amidst extensive interest, with more than 600 applications flooding in just 24 hours after Addo’s departure. Despite strong contenders like Slaven Bilic, Hervé Renard, and Kwesi Appiah, Queiroz emerged as the chosen candidate. Bilic had previously led Croatia to the 2008 Euro quarter-finals, while Renard was a recognized figure in African soccer, having guided Zambia and Ivory Coast to the African Cup of Nations victories. Appiah’s prior success with Ghana was overshadowed by a strained relationship with GFA president Kurt Okraku.
Carlos Queiroz: A Wealth of Experience
Queiroz’s extensive background includes participation in five different FIFA World Cups. His coaching career began with Portugal’s youth teams, where he led them to two consecutive U20 World Cup titles. His impressive portfolio also includes head coach positions at Sporting CP and high-profile roles in clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United, where he served as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant.
The Black Stars’ World Cup Journey
This upcoming World Cup will mark Ghana’s fifth appearance on the global stage. Having reached the Round of 16 in 2006 and the quarter-finals in 2010, the team faltered in the group stages in 2014 and 2022. The Black Stars recently experienced a setback by failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, ending a 21-year streak. The current squad features standouts like Mohamed Kudus from West Ham and Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth as they prepare for friendly matches against Mexico and Wales in the lead-up to the World Cup.
