Giovanni Reyna is eagerly anticipating the possibility of representing the United States in the upcoming World Cup, expressing that it would be a dream realized if he secures a spot on coach Mauricio Pochettino’s 26-man roster. The Borussia Mönchengladbach forward is committed to maintaining peak fitness as he aims for selection.
At just 23, Reyna recently scored his first goal for Gladbach in a 3-1 loss to Augsburg. While the goal came in a challenging match, he views it as a potential catalyst for the team’s improvement as they head towards the World Cup.
Reyna’s Battle with Injuries
The past few seasons have posed significant challenges for Reyna due to persistent injuries that have hindered his progress. After transferring from Borussia Dortmund last summer, he has yet to complete a full 90-minute match for Gladbach this season, though he has made substitute appearances in the last four outings.
“Injuries are frustrating, and nobody wants to be sidelined,” Reyna shared with reporters. “But I strive to make the most of every situation. The team has faced some tough luck, yet they’re thriving and working diligently around the clock to optimize their fitness.”
Aspirations for National Team Impact
Reyna has a deep connection to the national team, highlighting the importance of contributing on the international stage. “Being part of this national team means a lot to me. I’ve enjoyed my time with this group over the years, and I am eager to make a significant impact. Representing my country at the World Cup is truly my dream,” he said.
When asked about his chances of securing a place on Pochettino’s squad, Reyna acknowledged the competitive nature of selection. “It’s on everyone’s mind, but there are no guarantees. I want to be there for the World Cup in my home country. I try not to let it consume my thoughts, but undoubtedly, it’s a constant consideration,” he noted.
Reflecting on World Cup Experiences
The young forward reflected on his experiences from the 2022 Qatar tournament, where the USMNT was eliminated in the round of 16 by the Netherlands. “At that time, we were a bit inexperienced, and the Dutch team had the upper hand in experience and strategy. It was a valuable learning opportunity for us,” Reyna remarked.
“As I look forward to the upcoming tournament, I wish to increase my playing time, but my primary focus remains on contributing to the team’s success. Just being part of this journey is an incredible honor for me,” he added.
Pochettino’s Decision Ahead
The decision regarding Reyna’s inclusion in the squad rests with manager Pochettino, who will finalize the team on May 26th. Reyna has participated in the recent training camps, showcasing his abilities with performance highlights against countries such as Paraguay, Uruguay, Belgium, and Portugal.
Reyna emphasized his positive rapport with Pochettino, stating, “Our relationship is strong. During camps, he is enthusiastic, open, and honest about what he expects from both the team and the individual players.”
The United States kicks off Group D play against Paraguay on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, before facing off against Australia and Tolkien.
