Governor Warns Against Political Violence Ahead of 2027 Elections
Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya has issued a strong warning to politicians and their supporters regarding violence as party primaries approach for the 2027 general elections. In a state broadcast delivered from his chamber, Yahaya emphasized that his administration will adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards lawlessness and political turbulence.
Adherence to Electoral Guidelines Mandated
During his address, the governor clarified that political parties in Gombe State must conduct their primaries in strict adherence to the 2026 Elections Act and the guidelines crafted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He pointed out that Article 84, Section 2 of this law allows political parties to nominate candidates exclusively through direct primaries or consensus agreements.
Support for Consensus and Direct Primaries
Governor Yahaya noted that the ruling All Progressives Congress initially aimed for a consensus plan, garnering backing from party elders and state executives. He reported that this initiative saw considerable success, as numerous volunteers rallied around the candidates supported by the party. However, he acknowledged that disagreements among a small segment of volunteers hindered the achievement of unanimous consensus.
Emphasizing Democracy and Transparency
With the inevitability of a direct primary election now clear, Yahaya stated that achieving unanimous approval of a consensus agreement is unrealistic. He reiterated that if a consensus cannot be reached, a direct primary must follow. “This process is fundamental to democracy,” he asserted, emphasizing the importance of providing a transparent and equitable platform for all candidates to earn the confidence of their party members.
Commitment to Peace and Stability
As he approaches the final year of his second term on May 29, the governor reaffirmed that ensuring peace and stability in Gombe State is his top priority. “I address you not just as a political figure but as a governor committed to safeguarding lives and property. The stability of Gombe State surpasses the ambitions of any individual or party,” he stated.
Security Measures Reinforced for Primaries
Governor Yahaya has also instructed security agencies to take decisive action against anyone attempting to disrupt peace during and after the primary elections. “Violence, lawlessness, and political thuggery by any individual or group will face immediate consequences,” he warned, emphasizing the seriousness with which disturbances will be dealt.
Call for Unity and Focus on National Interests
The governor expressed concern over the emergence of “conflict entrepreneurs” who may exploit the political climate to destabilize the region. He called on political parties, aspirants, and supporters to prioritize national interests over personal ambitions, pledging ongoing collaboration with security forces to ensure peaceful primaries and general elections. “We must unite to prevent dark forces from sowing discord within our communities,” he added.
As the political landscape in Nigeria heats up in preparation for the 2027 general elections, political parties are increasingly leaning toward direct primaries or consensus strategies to select their candidates in accordance with the provisions of the 2026 Electoral Act.
