Gombe State Celebrates International Workers’ Day with Emphasis on Challenges
On May 1, Gombe State marked International Workers’ Day at the Pantami Township Stadium, where Governor Muhammadu Yahaya’s message was delivered by Deputy Governor Manassa Jatau. The event provided an opportunity to recognize the essential contributions of civil servants to effective governance and celebrate their dedication.
In his address, Jatau extended heartfelt congratulations to the state’s employees. He acknowledged their unwavering commitment and resilience, which he credited as pivotal to Gombe’s ongoing progress. Highlighting the day’s significance, he pointed out that the global observation of International Workers’ Day serves as a reminder of the vital role of civil servants in society.
Jatau particularly emphasized the relevance of this year’s theme, “Insecurity, Poverty – The Troubles of Decent Work,” stating that these issues significantly impact Nigeria’s economy and the livelihoods of its citizens. He underscored the urgent need for a proactive approach to tackling these challenges, illustrating how they intertwine with workers’ well-being and economic stability.
Addressing the responsibility of combating insecurity, the Deputy Governor stressed the need for collective action. He noted that ensuring safety is not solely the duty of security agencies but requires the active participation of all citizens. Since its inauguration, the current administration has prioritized security through collaboration with law enforcement to safeguard lives and property.
Connecting security with economic potential, Jatau urged public officials to endorse government initiatives aimed at maintaining peace and security, asserting that addressing these issues is crucial for poverty alleviation and economic revitalization. He also encouraged public servants to enhance their skills, advocating for continuous improvement in their contributions to governance.
Highlighting gender inclusivity, he mentioned Ashaka Cement’s recent initiative that trained 15 women as truck drivers, a step towards promoting women’s economic empowerment in the state. In alignment with the demands of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), he reassured workers of the government’s unwavering commitment to their welfare, pledging that their requests would receive prompt attention while ensuring the regular payment of salaries and other benefits.
Comrade Yusuf Bello, the Gombe State Chairman of the NLC, praised the state government for alleviating financial burdens by clearing long-overdue gratuities. He noted that this gesture has provided much-needed relief to numerous families and commended improvements to the working environment, such as the construction of the Three Arms Zone, which will enhance administrative conditions for civil servants.
NLC President Comrade Aish Bello commented on the appropriateness of the day’s theme in light of ongoing insecurity issues affecting economic growth. He outlined critical union demands, including increased pension adjustments, recruitment to fill staffing gaps, and an urgent revitalization of the Gombe State Printing and Publishing House, which is currently facing operational challenges due to outdated equipment.
Expressing optimism for collaboration with the government, Bello asserted that the NLC is hopeful for continued support in securing a better future for workers and the broader community. In a vote of thanks, Comrade Awwal Abudu, the Provincial Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, stressed that the event was not merely a celebration but also a platform to evaluate the government’s role in maintaining security and peace in the state. He called on workers to remain united and support governmental efforts in pursuit of prosperity and peace within society.
