ADC Announces Chris Uba as Presidential Candidate for 2027 Elections
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), under the leadership of Nafiu Bala Gombe, has officially designated Chief Chris Uba as its presidential candidate for the upcoming 2027 general elections. This announcement came following a successful consensus primary election.
Alignment with Principles of Federal Character
According to the ADC leadership, the allocation of the presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria reflects the party’s commitment to federal character principles, which emphasize equity and national inclusiveness. This strategic choice underscores the ADC’s dedication to fostering balanced representation within Nigeria’s diverse political landscape.
Transparent Selection Process
Nafiu Bala Gombe announced this significant development during the formal presentation of the party’s candidates for both presidential and gubernatorial positions. He highlighted that the consensus process was conducted transparently and peacefully, adhering to constitutional mandates and electoral regulations.
Candidates for Presidential Nomination
Initially, three party members submitted their expressions of interest and nomination forms to vie for the presidential election. The candidates included Dr. Bashir Mohammed Sani, Williams Charles, and Chris Uba. Mr. Gombe emphasized the importance of adherence to the rules stipulating consensus as a legitimate method for candidate selection.
Voluntary Withdrawals Enhance Unity
In line with Article 84(2) of the amended Electoral Act of 2026, which permits consensus-based nominations, two of the candidates voluntarily withdrew from the presidential race, voicing their support for Professor Chris Uba. This move aimed to unite the party and reinforce collective support for its leader.
Comprehensive List of Candidates Unveiled
In a statement reflecting humility and transparency, the ADC leadership announced a comprehensive list of candidates nominated across various levels under the party’s banner. This list not only highlights the presidential candidate but also includes 29 gubernatorial candidates from different states, all selected through constitutionally sanctioned intraparty processes.
Successful Conclusion of Primaries
Among the gubernatorial candidates are Muhammad Usman Shuwa from Adamawa State, Idris Adamu Yanoko from Kano State, Shamsuddin Muhammad from Kaduna State, and many others. Gombe reiterated that all primaries for presidential, gubernatorial, and legislative positions have been successfully completed, conducted in accordance with the Constitution of Nigeria, the 2026 Electoral Act, and the ADC’s internal electoral guidelines.
