Novastar Ventures Partners with Google AI to Launch Africa’s First Applied AI Lab
Venture capital firm Novastar Ventures has joined forces with the Google AI Futures Fund (AIFF) to establish the inaugural Google Africa Applied AI Lab. This initiative is designed to assist African startups and researchers in developing artificial intelligence (AI) solutions that can compete on a global scale.
The collaboration underscores Novastar’s conviction that Africa is becoming a significant player in the field of applied AI. Entrepreneurs across the continent are harnessing AI to enhance productivity and tackle critical issues in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and financial inclusion. Steve Beck, co-founder and managing partner of Novastar Ventures, emphasized this transformative potential.
Beck cited several impactful examples from Novastar’s investment portfolio. At Penda Health, AI-driven clinical support tools are enhancing diagnostic and treatment decisions, ultimately improving patient outcomes. NewGlobe is utilizing advanced AI technology to revolutionize teaching and learning across the nation while bolstering accountability within the public education system. In the agricultural sector, Agrails is deploying AI to enable smallholder farmers to access climate risk insurance, thereby increasing their resilience against climate change.
The Google Africa Applied AI Lab will provide selected startups and researchers with exclusive early access to leading-edge AI models from Google, along with technical mentorship from industry giants such as Google DeepMind and Google Research. Participants will benefit from Google Cloud credits and go-to-market support, in addition to mentorship and operational guidance from Novastar Ventures, Ventures Platform, 4DX Ventures, and Norsken22. The initiative also includes opportunities for equity investment and non-dilutive funding from Google.
Novastar envisions this program as a catalyst for nurturing the next generation of African entrepreneurs capable of establishing AI companies that thrive on the world stage. Besides fostering startups, the initiative aims to provide Google with valuable insights into emerging AI applications within African markets, allowing the tech giant to tailor its AI technology to create a meaningful impact.
In this partnership, Novastar Ventures will play a crucial role in identifying talented entrepreneurs and researchers, offering them mentorship, strategic guidance, networking opportunities, and potential investment to help them scale their businesses successfully.
The Google Africa Applied AI Lab is set to officially launch on July 1st, with applications opening for its first cohort. Organizers will assess candidates over the coming months and select five to ten startups and researchers, with the initial group expected to be announced in September.
This initiative exemplifies the increasing collaboration between global technology companies and African investors, aimed at strengthening the continent’s AI ecosystem and driving innovation. It also seeks to develop locally relevant AI solutions that address some of Africa’s most pressing social and economic challenges.
