Celebrating Democracy: Abia State’s Transformative Journey
As Nigeria marks its 27th anniversary of democracy, Abia State’s citizens are not only reflecting on the nation’s democratic journey but are also recognizing significant positive changes within their state. Chief Jerome Mbaonu Green-Amakwe, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Investment Promotion and Public-Private Partnerships, highlighted this shift in a statement issued to commemorate Democracy Day.
Green-Amakwe noted that this year’s celebrations resonate more deeply for the people of Abia, symbolizing the beginning of a new era grounded in renewal, responsible governance, accountability, and dedicated service to the community. He emphasized that while every state has its own reasons to be grateful and hopeful on Democracy Day, Abia stands out due to its recent developments, which have captured national attention. Residents are increasingly optimistic about the future and trust in their democratic leadership to yield tangible outcomes.
For over two decades leading up to 2023, Abia faced a series of challenges, including unfulfilled promises and missed opportunities, prompting citizens to yearn for substantial change. During this period, widespread concerns arose over infrastructure, public services, and economic growth, leading to calls for a new direction in governance. The election of Governor Alex Chioma Otti and Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu marked a pivotal moment, signaling a commitment to reform, transparency, and human-centered leadership.
Since taking office, the Otti administration has focused on repositioning Abia through innovative policies and projects aimed at restoring public confidence and accelerating development. Green-Amakwe remarked that the journey to political victory was not spontaneous or easy. Long before the 2023 elections, a dedicated coalition of supporters, stakeholders, and grassroots campaigners worked tirelessly to advocate for a better Abia, laying the groundwork for a transformative movement.
Key figures, including the late Prime Minister John Johnson, who chaired the campaign organization, and notable contributors such as Nnanna Ngwu and Hon. Mr. Acho Obioma, played essential roles in mobilizing community support. The relentless efforts of individuals like Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, Rep. Mike Akpala, and a host of grassroots coordinators continue to contribute to the state’s evolving political landscape.
Supporters of the administration attribute the momentum of reform to Governor Otti’s leadership style, characterized by strategic planning, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to progress. This approach has fostered a renewed belief among the population that governance can serve as a catalyst for positive change. Thanks to a team of dedicated public servants and stakeholders, the governor has successfully inspired confidence in the state’s future.
Honoring Sacrifices and Embracing Unity
Green-Amakwe emphasized that as Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day, it is essential to honor those whose sacrifices and courage have shaped Abia’s positive trajectory. He stated that the progress made thus far belongs not only to government officials but to all citizens and supporters who envision a future defined by excellence, innovation, and sustainable development.
Extending his congratulations to Governor Otti, Green-Amakwe urged Deputy Governor Emetu, members of the administration, grassroots activists, and the citizens of Abia to maintain their unity and uphold the values of integrity, transparency, and commitment to a collective vision for a prosperous state. He expressed optimism that with persistent efforts and divine guidance, Abia’s ongoing transformation will continue to flourish for generations to come.
