Call for Strategic Leadership Transition in Nigeria Customs Service
The Arewa Youth Advocates for Good Governance (AYAGG) have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt a strategic and lawful approach regarding the impending retirement of top executives at the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). They cautioned that a mass exodus of leadership could jeopardize ongoing reforms and operational efficiency within this crucial institution.
During a press conference held in Bauchi, AYAGG’s National Coordinator, Comrade Adamu Muhammad Abdullahi, emphasized the significance of a stable leadership framework for one of Nigeria’s key economic institutions, particularly at this critical juncture.
Abdullahi expressed the group’s concerns over the simultaneous departure of several senior NCS executives. This alarming trend coincides with the federal government’s implementation of extensive economic reforms, part of President Tinubu’s ‘New Hope’ agenda.
He stated, “At such a delicate stage, institutions responsible for revenue generation, trade facilitation, and border control must enjoy stability, policy continuity, and experienced leadership.” The NCS plays a vital role in enhancing government revenue, combating smuggling, and safeguarding national borders while promoting legitimate trade.
Abdullahi cautioned against the potential fallout from this leadership shift, warning that an unplanned exit of seasoned executives could create a leadership void, undermine organizational memory, delay modernization efforts, and diminish operational effectiveness. “This is not merely an administrative issue; it is of national economic importance,” he asserted.
To mitigate these risks, AYAGG has urged President Tinubu to consider measures that would ensure a smooth transition while safeguarding the progress already made. Such measures might include gradual leadership transitions, retaining critical expertise where legally permitted, and ensuring that succession planning prioritizes national interests over administrative deadlines.
“We are not defending individuals. We are advocating for the continuation of the system,” Abdullahi emphasized. He noted that the success of ongoing reforms relies heavily on consistent leadership, effective policy implementation, and a clear operational direction. Disrupting the momentum achieved in customs modernization, revenue growth, digital transformation, and border security would be detrimental.
Additionally, the group called on the Office of the President, national security agencies, the Federal Treasury, and other pertinent stakeholders to conduct a thorough assessment of the potential consequences stemming from significant leadership changes prior to any final decisions.
“As responsible citizens, we believe effective governance involves strategic decisions that not only enforce regulations but also protect state institutions and promote long-term national interests,” he concluded. AYAGG acknowledged President Tinubu’s commitment to institutional reform and expressed confidence in his administration’s ability to prioritize policies that enhance Nigeria’s economic framework and security apparatus.
The group reiterated its determination to support initiatives aimed at maintaining the operational efficiency, professionalism, and strategic capabilities of the Nigeria Customs Service, asserting that the stability of essential institutions is foundational to national development. Their appeal, they stressed, is grounded in patriotism, reason, and a commitment to overriding national interests.
