Youths Protest Water Shortage in Mabudi, Plateau State
In Mabudi, the administrative center of Langtang South Local Government Area in Plateau State, young people staged a protest on Wednesday to address the ongoing water scarcity affecting their community. The demonstrators voiced their concerns and threatened to boycott future elections if immediate action is not taken to rectify the situation.
Demonstrators Call for Action with Slogans
Wearing T-shirts emblazoned with “No water, no votes,” protesters gathered in large numbers and marched through the area, chanting slogans to amplify their demands. Many of the demonstrators expressed frustration over the lack of basic amenities and held up placards demanding access to safe drinking water.
Youth Leader Appeals for Government Intervention
Nanlil Gumbo, a youth leader, emphasized that the protest aimed to bring attention to crucial issues surrounding water accessibility and urged government representatives to develop a sustainable water supply strategy for the region. He underscored the seriousness of their demands, asserting that the community would no longer tolerate the empty promises of politicians who exploit their needs for electoral gain.
Residents Depend on Unsafe Water Sources
Gumbo lamented the unacceptable reality that residents often rely on unsafe water sources, which poses health risks to the community. He pointed out the heavy burden placed on families—especially women and children—who trek long distances in search of potable water. The persistent shortages exacerbate struggles for households in the region.
Local Government Responds to Crisis
In response to the protests, Butko Ilya, Chief Spokesperson for the Langtang South LGA Executive Committee, noted that temporary measures have been implemented to address the water crisis. He mentioned that since the dry season began, the local council president, Nanfa Nbin, has been arranging for daily water deliveries by tanker to each village, providing crucial support during these challenging times.
State Government Implements Long-Term Solutions
The Plateau State Ministry of Water Resources and Energy has initiated both immediate and long-term strategies to alleviate the water shortage concerns in the local government area. Ronan V. Gambo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, led a delegation to the region following the governor’s appeal and outlined plans for urgent interventions along with sustainable solutions.
Healthcare Crisis Linked to Water Scarcity
Nigeria is grappling with a severe water crisis, with around 179 million individuals lacking access to safely managed drinking water, according to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Projections indicate that by 2026, approximately 60-70 million people may still lack basic water access, while 114 million could be without adequate sanitation. This ongoing crisis results in the tragic loss of over 70,000 children annually due to diarrheal diseases.
