Rivers State Governor Withdraws from Gubernatorial Race
Siminalai Hubala, the Governor of Rivers State, has officially withdrawn from participating in the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary election scheduled for Thursday. In a statement titled “My Decision to Withdraw from the Rivers State Gubernatorial Primary,” Hubala expressed his commitment to support the party’s eventual candidate.
Decision Based on Reflection and Consultation
In his announcement, made late Wednesday, Hubala emphasized that his choice stemmed from thoughtful consideration and discussions with family, friends, and relevant stakeholders. He articulated that the priorities of Rivers State must outweigh personal aspirations, highlighting the importance of peace, stability, and unity.
Leadership Defined by Sacrifice
Hubala remarked, “Leadership ultimately means sacrifice,” underscoring that personal ambitions sometimes need to be put aside for the greater good of the community. His participation in the vetting committee for other gubernatorial candidates occurred shortly before his announcement, although he refrained from addressing the media afterward in Abuja.
Political Uncertainty Amidst Rivalry
The uncertainties surrounding Hubala’s political aspirations are further complicated by the stance of his political mentor and predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Wike has openly declared that Hubala would not secure a second term in 2027. The tension was amplified following a recent meeting between Wike and APC National Chairman Ntawe Yurwatoda in Abuja.
Long-standing Political Tensions
Despite being affiliated with opposing political parties, Wike—who belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—and Hubala remain engaged in an intense political rivalry over the control of the state’s political landscape and resources. Wike also serves as the Federal Capital Territory Minister in the APC-led government, which grants him significant influence across both parties.
Thankful Yet Resilient
Hubala expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his constituents, acknowledging that many may feel disappointed by his withdrawal. He stated, “I have faced immense pressure and difficult choices, but my love for Rivers State remains greater than anything else.” He also expressed appreciation for the backing he has received from APC leadership and President Bola Tinubu.
Another Withdrawal from the Gubernatorial Race
Sahara Group co-founder Tony Cole also announced his withdrawal from the APC gubernatorial primary ahead of Thursday’s election. He cited a commitment to party unity and reconciliation as the driving forces behind his decision, emphasizing ongoing discussions about the political future of the APC in Rivers State.
Potential Implications for Upcoming Primaries
While APC has not yet released an official list of candidates for the gubernatorial primary, sources indicate that Hubala, Cole, Kingsley Chinda, and Dax George-Kelly were cleared to run. The exits of Hubala and Cole now set the stage for a potential head-to-head competition between Chinda, a Wike ally, and George-Kelly in the primaries.
