Human Rights Group Denounces Governance Failures Amid Rising Violence in Nigeria
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed deep concern regarding the continuing violence in Plateau and Benue states, attributing it to a profound failure of leadership at both state and federal levels. The organization warns that ongoing attacks reflect a serious moral and security crisis within the nation.
In a statement released on Thursday, National Coordinator Emmanuel Onwubiko conveyed his distress over the escalating violence, which is reportedly being perpetrated by Fulani insurgents. He emphasized that this situation has led to significant loss of life and the displacement of vulnerable communities.
HURIWA criticized state authorities for their inadequate response strategies and policy shortcomings. The group highlighted that persistent attacks place local populations at risk, while the aggressors operate with no fear of repercussions.
Notably, HURIWA pointed out that the Benue State government has dismissed claims of a genocidal pattern in the violence, despite increasing local and international scrutiny. Recent reports from a visiting U.S. Congressional delegation have raised alarms over targeted assaults against predominantly Christian communities in northern Nigeria.
In additions, Onwubiko acknowledged that numerous rural areas in Plateau State are effectively under the control of armed groups. He expressed grave concern over the lack of initiatives to reclaim these territories or facilitate the safe return of displaced individuals.
HURIWA stated that mere acknowledgments of the situation without proactive measures constitute a significant failure by the government to fulfill its duty of protecting citizens’ lives and property.
The association noted that the cycle of violence has intensified since the current federal administration took office, with repeated attacks resulting in high casualties and widespread displacement across affected communities. Onwubiko cautioned that perpetual bloodshed must not be ignored or trivialized, highlighting that inaction could further erode public trust and jeopardize national unity.
To combat this crisis, HURIWA called for the immediate apprehension and prosecution of all individuals complicit in the violence, insisting that no one should be above the law. The organization urged the federal government to collaborate with state authorities to reclaim communities dominated by armed groups and restore proper governance in these areas.
HURIWA advocated for the implementation of ongoing intelligence-led security operations in vulnerable regions, including the creation of rapid response teams to deter further assaults. The coalition stressed the necessity of transparent communication, urging the governments of Plateau and Benue states to provide clear and accurate assessments of security developments instead of contradictory or politically charged narratives.
Additionally, the group called for immediate humanitarian assistance, including compensation and rehabilitation programs for victims and displaced persons affected by the violence. HURIWA further urged the Federal Government to conduct a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s national security strategy to tackle the root causes of these continual attacks.
HURIWA concludes with a stark reminder that Nigeria must not tolerate a scenario in which armed groups act with impunity, leaving ordinary citizens to fend for themselves. The group affirmed that the sanctity of human life must be upheld, with justice not only being served but also perceived to be equitable.
