Accusations of Medical Neglect Against ICPC
Muyiwa Adekye, the media adviser to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has made serious allegations against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC), claiming that it denied the former governor necessary medical attention while in custody.
Requests for Medical Attention Rejected
Adekye stated that following complaints of itchy and swollen eyes, El-Rufai’s team sought permission for him to visit a hospital. Unfortunately, their requests were reportedly dismissed by ICPC officials.
Deteriorating Health Raises Concerns
On June 4, El-Rufai was reportedly taken to an eye specialist; however, his condition has since worsened, alarming his family. Adekye expressed deep concern regarding the ongoing deterioration of the former governor’s eye health, which has caused distress to his loved ones.
Claims of Inadequate Medical Communication
Adekeye further alleged that the ICPC failed to communicate El-Rufai’s medical requests accurately to his family. He stated that despite an examination by two commission personnel, no medical treatment was coordinated, and misinformation was relayed to family members regarding El-Rufai’s willingness to see a doctor.
Previous Instances of Miscommunication
This incident is not the first time Adekye claims that the ICPC has wrongly attributed statements to El-Rufai. According to him, there have been prior occasions where the agency has misrepresented the former governor’s needs, raising serious questions about its operational integrity.
Legal Actions and Rights Violations
In light of El-Rufai’s ongoing eye problems while in custody, his legal representatives obtained a court order to ensure he received appropriate medical treatment. Adekye criticized the ICPC for allegedly ignoring this judicial directive and for failing to uphold the rights of individuals in custody.
Family’s Ongoing Struggles with ICPC
In early May, El-Rufai’s family had already voiced similar concerns, claiming that the ICPC obstructed their attempts to deliver essential items such as medical care and food. According to their account, the former governor’s personal doctor was denied access to discuss critical medical test results due to bureaucratic barriers imposed by commission officials.
