Greater Collaboration Urged to Enhance National Security
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation and strategic engagement between the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Community Relations Commission (PCRC). This initiative aims to bolster national security and further community policing throughout the country.
Building Trust Through Partnerships
Mr. Disu highlighted that sustained partnerships, seamless information sharing, and fostering mutual trust are critical components in addressing emerging security challenges and ensuring safer communities across Nigeria. He articulated these points at the PCRC’s 42nd Anniversary Ceremony, held at the Police Resource Center in Jabi, Abuja.
Celebrating Commitment and Sacrifice
Represented by Deputy Inspector General of Police for Logistics and Supplies, DIG Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, the IGP described the anniversary as more than a mere celebration of longevity; it reflects the dedication and collective responsibility to enhance public safety and national unity.
Advocating for a Proactive Approach to Policing
He stressed that the future of policing—and national security as a whole—relies on deeper collaboration, innovative engagement, and more robust community participation. This type of policing is not only proactive and intelligence-driven but also incorporates technology to foster a community-based approach.
The Role of PCRC in Community Engagement
The IGP argued that police reforms and innovations would falter without public trust and active engagement, commending the vital role the PCRC plays in cultivating relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Embracing Change for a Safer Future
Disu envisioned a future characterized by safe, resilient, and peaceful communities, which necessitates renewed dedication to community involvement and ongoing dialogue between police and citizens. He called for the PCRC to adapt continually, integrating new ideas and technologies that mirror contemporary policing realities.
Celebrating a Legacy of Service
During the event, the IGP addressed the theme, “PCRC’s 42 Years of Service, Legacy of Service, and Future of Safe Communities.” He underscored the longstanding commitment of the organization to trust, collaboration, and community-focused policing, noting that over the past four decades, the PCRC has established itself as a cornerstone of community-oriented policing in Nigeria.
Recognizing Shared Responsibilities
Mr. Disu reinforced the idea that public safety is a shared responsibility, thriving when citizens and law enforcement collaborate. He recognized the PCRC’s contributions marked by numerous acts of service and the bridges built between the community and police.
PCRC’s Role in Bridging Community Gaps
Additionally, the Chairman of the Police Commission (PSC), Mr. DIG Hashim Argungu (rtd.), represented by Mr. Torti Kalu, Director of Protocol and Public Relations, remarked that the PCRC has acted as the civilian nerve center for the Nigeria Police Force since its inception in 1984. He noted that during times of strained relationships between citizens and the police, the PCRC has facilitated dialogue, affirming that community policing effectively reduces crime by increasing legitimacy rather than relying solely on arrests.
Honoring a Visionary Foundation
Earlier, the PCRC National Chairman, Alhaji Mogaji Olaniyan, reflected on the anniversary as a moment to celebrate resilience, unity, and dedication to the ideals established at the organization’s founding. He recounted that the PCRC, initiated 42 years ago by the late IGP Etim Inyang (rtd.), has evolved from a small project into a formidable organization committed to fostering amicable relationships between the police and the public.
