Nigerian Police Chief Urges Continuous Support Amid Security Challenges
Inspector General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, has called on Nigerian citizens to sustain their prayers for the nation and its security agencies as efforts intensify to address the country’s pressing security challenges. He underscored the importance of public support and cooperation in combating issues such as banditry, terrorism, and other security threats.
During a memorial parade in Abuja on Tuesday, held to honor the 17 police officers who lost their lives while serving in the Police Task Force, IGP Disu emphasized the dedication of the Nigerian Police Force and allied agencies. He asserted that these forces are working tirelessly to safeguard lives and property nationwide.
He appealed to the public, stating, “I implore Nigerians to keep us in your prayers. We pledge to fulfill our duties in protecting lives and property while addressing the challenges posed by banditry.”
Remembering the Fallen Heroes
Seventeen policemen were tragically killed in a terrorist attack on May 8, 2026, at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, located in Yobe State. The attack highlighted the dangers faced by security personnel in their commitment to protecting the nation.
Paying tribute to these courageous officers, IGP Disu expressed sorrow over their loss, recognizing their sacrifices made in service to the country. He affirmed, “With heavy hearts and immense pride, we gather today to honor the 17 brave officers of the Police Task Force who laid down their lives during this tragic event.”
Commitment to National Security
Disu continued, emphasizing the officers’ dedication to ensuring peace and security in Nigeria. “Their sacrifices embody the highest levels of patriotism and duty. The Nigeria Police Force, particularly the Police Task Force, is committed to maintaining an active presence in joint operations with the Armed Forces and other security agencies in the Northeast, confronting terrorism and violent extremism daily,” he declared.
Highlighting the perilous nature of their work, he pointed out that officers often risk their lives under challenging conditions to ensure that citizens can enjoy a sense of safety and peace. “We want every Nigerian to recognize that each day begins with our personnel rising to serve, protect, and respond to any call when needed,” he remarked.
A Promise to Remember
The IGP reassured the public that the sacrifices of the fallen officers will not be forgotten, reiterating the military’s determination to uphold national security. “Their sacrifices will never be in vain,” he promised, stating that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to serving the nation with integrity.
“To the families of our fallen heroes, the Nigeria Police Force stands united with you during this challenging time,” he concluded. “We share your grief and are devoted to supporting you as we navigate this difficult path together.”
