Senate Urges Action on Rising School Attacks Amid Kidnappings
The Nigerian Senate convened on Wednesday to address the alarming surge in school attacks, which poses a serious threat to the nation’s future. Lawmakers emphasized the urgent need to secure the release of numerous children, teachers, and other victims abducted by armed assailants in the Oriile Local Government Area of Oyo State.
In a resolution prompted by a motion from Senator Abdulfatai Buhari (APC, Oyo Central), the Senate called for the federal government to enhance and broaden the Safe Schools Initiative. This would involve improved oversight, intelligence collection, and more effective security measures for vulnerable educational institutions and surrounding communities across Nigeria.
During the debate, Senator Buhari drew attention to the horrific attack on May 15, which impacted neighboring communities in Akolo-Esiere and Oriyele Local Government Areas. He described the abduction of the victims from what was intended to be a safe learning environment as a significant failure in safeguarding education.
Highlighting the severity of the incident, Buhari warned that ongoing insecurity in educational settings could erode public trust in the educational system and foster increasing fear among rural populations. He expressed particular concern about reports indicating that young children were among the abducted victims, underscoring the brutality faced by these innocent individuals.
Additionally, Buhari mourned the tragic killing of a teacher during the incident, which serves as a stark reminder of the security challenges confronting various communities. He noted that the attack had exacerbated fears surrounding safety in Oyo State, emphasizing the urgent need for protective measures in schools and among local residents.
In a gesture of solidarity, the Senate observed a moment of silence to honor those who lost their lives, extending condolences to the bereaved families, the residents of Oyo State, and the state government. Lawmakers directed security agencies to allocate all necessary resources to facilitate the safe return of those still in captivity and to thwart similar attacks in other regions.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Ed North) advocated for a thorough review of funding for security agencies, arguing that greater oversight of security expenditures by the National Assembly is essential for ensuring accountability and efficacy. In response, Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West) highlighted the existence of ungoverned areas across Nigeria that continue to foster criminal activities, urging state governments to take a proactive role in bolstering security operations.
The Senate acknowledged recent initiatives by a federal government delegation, led by the Chief of Staff to the President, who visited the affected regions to express condolences to the victims and assess the situation. After the plenary session, Senator Buhari urged Nigerians to avoid politicizing this tragic event, emphasizing the need for discretion in ongoing rescue efforts due to the involvement of numerous children.
Buhari confirmed that security officials are actively working to ensure the safe return of the victims, warning that revealing sensitive details about the operation could hinder their efforts.
