NIMC Commits to Enhancing Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reaffirmed its dedication to reinforcing Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), aiming to enhance governance, improve service delivery, fortify national security, and stimulate socio-economic development.
Leadership Insights on Digital Identity Initiatives
During a digital conference in Abuja titled “Co-Building Africa’s Digital Infrastructure,” NIMC’s Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Abisoye Coker Odusote, highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at constructing a secure and inclusive digital identity ecosystem throughout the country.
Strategic Reforms and Technological Integration
Represented by Sulaiman Faradeh, Head of Infrastructure Technology and Identity Database, Coker Odusote emphasized that the commission is executing strategic reforms, fostering collaboration among institutions, and implementing secure digital identity systems. These efforts are designed to enhance service delivery for citizens and residents.
The Importance of National Identification Number (NIN)
The National Identification Number (NIN) remains central to Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda. It serves as a critical tool for digital authentication, identity verification, and access to various services offered by both government and private sectors.
Implementation of Presidential Directives
Coker Odusote revealed that, following a Presidential Directive issued on April 5, 2024, Ministries and Agencies (MDAs) are required to incorporate the effective use of NIN in their data collection, identity verification, and biometric policies across digital platforms. He assured that NIMC has established the necessary frameworks for nationwide implementation of this directive.
Federal Vision for Integrated Digital Identity Ecosystem
The NIMC Director General further elaborated on the federal government’s vision to create an integrated, secure, and interoperable digital identity ecosystem that promotes transparency, accountability, and seamless access to services. He explained that NIMC plays a pivotal role in advancing digital governance and supporting national development objectives through the integration of digital identity systems and the deployment of the National Public Key Infrastructure (nPKI).
Call for Collaboration in Digital Identity Ecosystem
Coker Odusote also urged public and private stakeholders to enhance the implementation of Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem and related initiatives, which are crucial for improving service delivery outcomes for Nigerians. He reiterated NIMC’s commitment to utilizing technology, innovation, and secure digital systems to cultivate a more connected, efficient, and resilient nation.
