INEC Chairman Calls for Strict Action Against Vote Buying
Professor Joash Ampitan, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged for the stringent enforcement of electoral laws to combat vote buying, emphasizing that offenders should face arrest and prosecution as per legal provisions.
Warnings Ahead of Ekiti State Governorship Election
Ampitan made these remarks during the presentation of voter registers to political parties in Ekiti State, ahead of the governorship election scheduled for June 20. He highlighted that vote buying poses one of the most significant threats to Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
Call for Firm Action from Security Agencies
The INEC chairman urged security authorities to take decisive measures against individuals engaged in vote trading, stressing that this is a criminal act under election law. He stated that both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) have crucial roles in ensuring that those involved in such activities are swiftly apprehended.
Political Parties Urged to Maintain Integrity
Ampitan further cautioned political parties against participating in vote trading, labeling it a significant setback to Nigeria’s democratic progression. He reiterated INEC’s commitment to prosecuting violators and called on all political parties to act responsibly to protect the electoral process.
Presentation of Updated Voter Roll
The voter list presentation was part of INEC’s constitutional duty in preparation for the upcoming gubernatorial election. Ampitan emphasized the importance of complying with the electoral law, which dictates that the voter register must be published and presented to political parties at least 30 days before any election.
Accuracy of Voter Rolls is Essential
Highlighting the significance of the voter roll, Ampitan noted that its accuracy is foundational for conducting free and fair elections. He mentioned that INEC has undertaken a comprehensive verification and update process to ensure that the register reflects the true voting population.
Encouragement for Political Parties to Review Voter Lists
Ampitan encouraged political parties to meticulously examine their voter rolls and report any discrepancies within the prescribed timeframe. He emphasized that the effectiveness of the election process relies heavily on the joint efforts of INEC, political parties, and security agencies.
Optimism for Enhanced Voter Participation
Expressing hope for increased voter participation, Ampitan pointed to previous elections as proof of growing public confidence in the electoral system. He announced that a peace agreement would be established with the political parties on the eve of the Ekiti governorship election, promoting a commitment to peaceful campaign practices and issue-based discourse.
