This weekend, the focus shifts to Lingfield for the highly anticipated Derby and Oaks trials, with coverage airing live on Sky Sports Racing. Host Kate Tracey will be joined by regular analysts Declan Rix and Sam Boswell to preview these Classic Trials, alongside insights into the Victoria Cup at Ascot.
Aidan O’Brien and Charlie Appleby are the frontrunners in the Lingfield betting market. Ryan Moore, coming off a successful outing in Chester earlier this week, aims to maintain his winning streak.
Preview of the William Hill Oaks Trial Fillies Stakes
Kate Tracey expresses particular interest in Ryan Moore’s potential choices, noting that there seems to be less distinction between Bloom and Cameo than expected. She reflects on past performance, stating, “First and second strings don’t always yield predictable outcomes, but I am optimistic about Broome’s prospects.” She believes that Broome has shown promise in her recent step up to 10 furlongs, suggesting that more is expected from her in this race.
Declan Rix provides his take on Amora Queen, a horse trained by Charlie Johnston who has shown a strong start to the season. “This mare is quite large and may take some time to fully mature. However, her performance at Doncaster indicates she could thrive with an increased distance. If Silvestre de Sousa can guide her effectively, we anticipate she may exceed expectations,” he shares.
BetVictor’s Sam Boswell weighs in, expressing his reservations about the current form of Charlie Appleby’s yard. “While I’m a fan of Romantic Symphony, there’s a nagging concern regarding the trainer’s recent performance. However, I find her debut at Newmarket quite compelling, particularly with the suggestion that firmer ground may enhance her efforts. I must admit, I’m not overly excited about Aidan’s two entries here.”
Analysis of the William Hill Lingfield Derby Trial Stakes
Referring to Isaac Newton, Kate notes his impressive showing at last year’s Critérium de Saint-Cloud. “He’s grown substantially since then,” she claims. “His most recent run in the Fieldon Stakes looked like a necessary experience. At 7/2, he could represent good value given Aidan O’Brien’s confidence in him.”
December adds a critical perspective on Charlie Appleby’s Mahobey, suggesting the horse may be overpriced for his current form. “I favor Maltese Cross, who should appreciate the distance increase. Still, Isaac Newton’s performance in the Group 1 Critérium de Saint-Cloud gives him a solid edge, and I expect he will handle the competition effectively,” he notes. “His educational ride that day could prove invaluable going into this race.”
Sam voices his own thoughts on Mahobey, remarking that while a price of 13/8 might have been acceptable under better circumstances for Appleby, he feels there’s room for improvement. “Looking back, his victory at Newbury was genuinely impressive, and I liked his determination in winning against Del Maro at Newmarket. I see potential for him to showcase even more ability here.”
