James Maddison is eager to dive back into action after a lengthy absence, aiming to assist Tottenham in securing their place in the Premier League during what he describes as an unforgettable season.
After missing competitive play for a year due to a severe knee injury, Maddison made his return in Spurs’ 1-1 draw against Leeds. This match left Tottenham precariously positioned just two points above the relegation zone.
In a spirited cameo, the 29-year-old almost earned a penalty in the dying moments of the game. He expressed that any apprehensions about his comeback quickly faded away.
Maddison reflected on the challenges faced by the club, stating, “It’s been a tough season for Tottenham. For both fans and players alike, the ups and downs have been significant, especially with multiple managerial changes. It’s been hard not being able to contribute and support the team.”
He elaborated on his initial feelings when stepping onto the field, stating, “Once I was on the pitch, I knew I had to make an impact. The adrenaline coursing through me made me forget all my worries.” Maddison expressed his eagerness to get to work, focusing on safety and gradually building his strength, despite the club’s current struggles.
Maddison’s recovery journey has been arduous, beginning with a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament last May during a Europa League match against Bodo/Glimt. Unfortunately, he suffered a complete tear in a preseason friendly against Newcastle on August 3.
Reflecting on his recovery, Maddison noted, “Initially, specialists advised against surgery, believing rehab would suffice. However, it became clear that further intervention was needed, resulting in surgery in South Korea.”
Despite the mental and physical challenges of the past year, Maddison feels he has emerged stronger. “The support from Spurs fans has meant the world to me, especially during my darkest days post-surgery. Now, I look back fondly on this journey.”
Manager Roberto De Zerbi has praised Maddison’s presence in the dressing room, even during his time away from play. Maddison, aware of the team’s challenges, has endeavored to motivate his teammates, conveying the significance of their situation for the fans.
“I always aim to uplift those around me,” Maddison explained. “Being local, I understand the deep connection the fans have with the club. It’s essential for me to share that perspective, especially with international colleagues and younger players who might not fully grasp the weight of our circumstances.”
