Katsina State Commits N1.7 Billion to Child Nutrition Programs
The Katsina State Government has announced a substantial investment of N1.7 billion aimed at enhancing child survival rates and public health through comprehensive nutrition programs. This initiative was unveiled by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda during the inauguration of a workshop hosted by the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) at the Local Government Service Commission Hall in Katsina.
Strategic Measures Against Malnutrition
Governor Radda emphasized that the allocated funds will ensure the establishment of a coordinated and sustainable state nutrition program, alongside the formation of a dedicated state nutrition board. He noted that malnutrition poses one of the most significant public health challenges in the region, adversely affecting education, household income, community productivity, and overall economic development.
Workshop Focuses on Health Professionals’ Roles
The workshop, themed “Strengthening the Role of Dietitians and Dieticians in the Katsina State Health System,” successfully brought together health professionals, government officials, and development partners to discuss strategies for combating malnutrition across the state.
Expanding Treatment Facilities for Malnutrition
In his address, Governor Radda highlighted the establishment of additional Outpatient Treatment Program (OTP) centers as well as nine stabilization centers specifically designed for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Furthermore, he announced that his administration has allocated N700 million in counter-funding for the ARIN Project 2.0, which aims to reduce malnutrition and enhance child survival rates.
Reforming Health Infrastructure
The governor elaborated on the extensive health sector reforms initiated under his leadership, including the renovation and revitalization of 268 primary health centers at a total expense of N26.7 billion. This comprehensive intervention comprises not only physical renovations but also the provision of motorcycle ambulances, medical equipment, and improved water and sanitation facilities, all aimed at strengthening health care delivery in the state.
Enhancing Health Workforce and Support for Students
Governor Radda announced that the state has recruited nearly 800 health workers—including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists—to bolster service delivery. Additionally, the government has approved N950 million to cover allowances for Katsina State medical students studying both locally and abroad from 2020 to 2023.
A Call for Community Engagement in Nutrition Initiatives
Addressing the issue of food security, Governor Radda highlighted efforts made over the past three years, including the provision of improved seedlings, fertilizers, and over 400 tractors to boost agricultural production. He mentioned the distribution of more than 90,000 bags of food to vulnerable households. However, he stressed that infrastructure improvements and funding alone cannot eradicate malnutrition. There is a pressing need for behavioral changes, active community participation, and evidence-based interventions. He encouraged practices like exclusive breastfeeding, enhanced maternal nutrition, and the use of locally available food resources to achieve balanced diets.
Encouraging Sustainable Agricultural Practices
Governor Radda pointed out Katsina’s rich agricultural potential, which can be leveraged to combat malnutrition through effective nutrition education. He advocated for the promotion of indigenous crops, such as moringa, to enhance nutritional outcomes. The governor urged the Nutrition Society of Nigeria and other stakeholders to amplify their research and advocacy efforts, increasing public awareness regarding nutrition in the state.
Expert Endorsements and Collaborative Efforts
Professor Kabir Ibrahim Mataz, a representative from the Provincial Bureau of Statistics, commended the government’s reforms in the health sector, noting that investing in nutrition is crucial for human capital development. Dr. Maimuna Aliyu Radidi echoed this sentiment, calling for increased investment in nutrition services and professional development for health practitioners. Hajiya Lukaya Hamza Usman, Chairman of the Katsina State Nutrition Commission, praised Governor Radda’s commitment to prioritizing health and nutrition. Kanwan Katsina, Alhaji Usman Bello, also urged stakeholders to reinforce their collaboration in improving nutritional outcomes across the state. The event witnessed participation from members of the State Executive Council, representatives of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, development partners, health professionals, and various stakeholders.
