ADC in Kebbi State Claims Political Motivation Behind Malami’s Prosecution
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State has asserted that the ongoing investigation and prosecution of its gubernatorial candidate, Abubakar Malami (SAN), is driven by political motives. The party is determined to remain steadfast in its objectives, undeterred by these challenges as it approaches the 2027 general elections.
This stance was articulated in a joint statement released by the ADC’s state chairman, Mr. Sufiyanu Bala, and the Chairman of the ADC Elders Forum, Alhaji Shehu Sambawa, during a press conference in Birnin Kebbi on Saturday.
While the ADC expressed its commitment to support lawful investigations of individuals suspected of misconduct, it accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of manipulating state institutions in an effort to undermine opposition parties.
“We are open to legitimate investigations and prosecutions of any alleged wrongdoer, but we cannot overlook the ongoing efforts aimed at silencing opposition members nationwide,” the party remarked.
The ADC firmly believed that the actions taken against Malami — including his arrest, detention, and the ongoing prosecution — were carefully orchestrated to serve predetermined political objectives. They characterized these developments as part of a broader pattern of political persecution.
According to the ADC, Malami’s legal troubles stem from allegations concerning his assets, which they argue fail to consider his background prior to his appointment as Attorney General. The party emphasized that these actions are misguided and politically charged.
Despite the adversity, the ADC pledged unwavering support for Malami, asserting that its members in Kebbi State would stand united behind their gubernatorial candidate in the face of legal challenges. “All members of the ADC Kebbi State Chapter remain resolute in our support for our party leadership and candidate, regardless of the circumstances,” the statement confirmed.
The party further vowed that intimidation, harassment, or negative media narratives would not diminish their commitment to challenging the APC in the upcoming elections. The situation around Malami has stirred significant political discourse, with the ADC and anti-corruption agencies at odds over the nature and motivations behind the legal actions. While the ADC claims a political agenda, the agencies maintain that their investigations are grounded in legal standards, awaiting resolution in the courts.
Having served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice from 2015 to 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, Malami remains a central figure in Kebbi’s political landscape as he vies for the governorship in the 2027 elections.
