Kenya Hosts North Africa Innovation Forum to Boost Startup Growth
The Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) is set to host the North Africa Innovation Forum this week, establishing Kenya as a key entry point for startups from Tunisia and Egypt aiming to penetrate sub-Saharan Africa’s market.
Highlighting the Startup Ecosystem at IPDAYS Nairobi
The event, named IPDAYS Nairobi x Silicon Savannah Startup Fair 2026, represents the inaugural Kenyan edition of the Inno’Preneurs Days (IPDAYS). Launched in Tunisia in 2022, IPDAYS has previously taken place in cities like Tunis, Cairo, and Abidjan. This year’s Nairobi edition is organized in collaboration with KoTDA, RedStart Tunisie, Seketak Solutions, Fie Labs, and GAK Advisory.
Diverse Participation and Engaging Activities
The forum brought together six Tunisian startups and over 60 Kenyan ventures, alongside investors, policymakers, and ecosystem enablers from the three nations. The agenda features B2B and B2C matchmaking sessions, investor pitches, policy briefings, and workshops designed to enhance capabilities in areas such as cross-border market entry, financing, and intellectual property commercialization.
Encouraging Regional Collaboration
In his opening remarks, KoTDA CEO John Paul Okwili emphasized the necessity for deeper collaboration across Africa, positioning Konza as a structured entry point for startups looking to expand southward. He remarked that fostering the continent’s startup ecosystem requires innovation to be protected, commercialized, and supported through skill development.
Addressing Challenges in Africa’s Innovation Landscape
Mr. Okwili pointed out the historical isolation of Africa’s innovation ecosystem, which has limited opportunities for cross-border partnerships due to entrenched power dynamics. Addressing these issues is essential for promoting a more interconnected regional startup environment.
Building on Past Initiatives
RedStart Tunisie Accelerator CEO Douja Gharbi noted that the Nairobi forum builds upon a trade mission to Kenya from nearly a year ago. She outlined aims to deepen cooperation and create scalable pathways that enable startup growth across borders. Assem Kamil, CEO of Seketak Solutions, acknowledged the success of previous events in linking African startups with new business opportunities and investments.
Outcomes Supporting Startup Mobility
A key outcome of the forum was the establishment of a cooperation agreement among KoTDA, RedStart Tunisie, and Seketak. This agreement includes initiatives for startup exchanges, soft landing programs, joint acceleration efforts, and enhanced capacity building, thereby formalizing the previously informal startup mobility between North and South Africa.
This initiative aligns with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to enhance market integration for goods, services, and digital trade, underscoring the momentum toward intra-African economic integration at the startup level.
Significance of Recent Legislative Developments
The forum’s timing is particularly significant, occurring just a day after President William Ruto signed the Technopolis Bill 2024 into law. This legislation establishes a formal legal framework for technopolis development, in line with Kenya’s Vision 2030. It aims to attract technology-driven companies, streamline regulatory compliance, and bolster the governance infrastructure necessary to support the aspirations of Kenya’s innovation ecosystem.
Investment Trends in Kenya’s Startup Landscape
Kenya’s increasing appeal as a startup hub is evident in rising investment flows. According to KoTDA, 15 Tunisian firms have successfully entered the Kenyan market, as revealed by Tunisia’s Ambassador to Kenya, His Excellency Anouar Ben Youssef, with the number continuing to grow.
