Mainu Reflects on Manchester United Tenure Amid Changes
Koby Mainu acknowledges that he contemplated his future at Manchester United when he was sidelined by former manager Ruben Amorim. However, his commitment to the club has always been paramount. The lack of a role for Mainu in Amorim’s often-criticized 3-4-2-1 formation raised concerns that the talented midfielder might be lost to the club, especially just two years after he scored the decisive goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
Despite a request for a loan being turned down in the last week of the previous summer transfer window, Mainu remained on the bench as Amorim never assigned him a starting position in the Premier League. Following a disappointing season, Amorim was dismissed in January, paving the way for Michael Carrick to take over managerial duties until the season’s end.
Carrick’s Impact on Mainu’s Career
Upon Carrick’s arrival, he reinstated Mainu to the central role he had thrived in under Erik ten Hag, and the 21-year-old has since recaptured his form. He even signed a new contract with Manchester United and earned a call-up to the England national team. When asked how close he came to leaving the club, Mainu emphasized, “My priority was always to play for Manchester United, the club where I grew up.”
While Amorim claimed to have evaluated Mainu, he concluded that the midfielder could only fit into the role of United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, thereby justifying his exclusion from the lineup. Reflecting on the managerial change, Mainu remarked that new coaches often bring different philosophies, and if they don’t see a player fitting their system, that player will likely be sidelined.
Lessons Learned During a Challenging Time
Mainu described his period under Amorim as challenging, relying on the support of seasoned players such as Casemiro and Fernandes, alongside close friend Joshua Zirkzee. “Transitioning from being a regular starter to rarely playing was difficult,” Mainu noted. “However, it provided me valuable lessons about myself and the game, including the virtues of patience and self-management.” He acknowledged the emotional support from family and friends during this time, which helped him maintain a positive outlook for the future.
Carrick’s Leadership and Player Development
Since Carrick’s appointment, Mainu has emerged as a regular starter, missing just one match selection since the switch. United has achieved significant success under Carrick, winning 10 out of 15 matches and securing a spot in next season’s Champions League with just a few points needed to clinch third place in the league. Although Carrick’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, negotiations are likely to extend his tenure.
Mainu credits Carrick with providing guidance that extends beyond the pitch. “He understands me as both a player and a person. He not only offers tactical advice but also shows genuine concern for my personal life,” Mainu remarked. This unique approach has contributed to a nurturing environment for player development at the club, a feature that Mainu appreciates deeply.
Mainu’s Aspirations with England
Recently included in England manager Thomas Tuchel’s extended squad, Mainu expressed excitement about his national team prospects. This call-up marks his return since March when he participated in a match against Uruguay and a friendly against Japan. Despite this achievement, Mainu remains focused on further improving his skills. “Satisfaction can lead to complacency; thus, I am committed to maintaining consistency and working closely with my coaches,” he stated.
With no control over his immediate future, Mainu is concentrated on his performance in the upcoming matches, aware that every opportunity counts toward his ultimate goal of solidifying his place on the national team.
