Political Resignation Reflects Ongoing Turmoil in the ADC
Rt. Leke Abegide, the representative for Yagba East/Yagba West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency of Kogi State, has made a significant political shift by resigning from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Citing an extended internal crisis, leadership instability, and concerted efforts to undermine his ambitions, Abegide declared that this move, though challenging, was essential for safeguarding his political future.
Decision Driven by Consultation and Reflection
In conversations with reporters about his departure, Abegide emphasized the thorough deliberation behind his choice, dispelling notions of impulsivity. “This decision, while difficult, is grounded in extensive consultations with political partners, supporters, and stakeholders,” he stated, underscoring that the choice was arrived at after considerable introspection.
Legal Battles Underpin Structural Problems
The roots of the ADC’s ongoing crisis, according to Abegide, can be traced back to his own legal action initiated in 2025 against notable party figures, including former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola. This lawsuit, aimed at settling leadership disputes and safeguarding members’ constitutional rights, has been met with delays, which Abegide attributes to obstructive tactics from the defendants. “The ongoing legal process has been frustratingly prolonged, prompting my counsel to advise me to explore alternative political avenues,” he explained.
Concerns Over Leadership Legitimacy
Abegide raised alarm about the ADC’s leadership structure, arguing that the party currently lacks a functional and duly elected leadership capable of fulfilling its statutory responsibilities. He contended that the absence of a national president or secretary jeopardizes the party’s ability to endorse candidates, a critical requirement for any aspirant seeking elective office.
Frustration with Internal Dynamics
The lawmaker expressed concern that certain factions within the party are more interested in sidelining long-term loyalists than fostering its growth. “It seems that the focus of some in the coalition is not on advancing the party but rather on deterring those of us who have been committed since its inception in 2019,” he remarked, reflecting on his dedication and efforts to elevate the ADC to a recognized political entity.
Seeking a New Political Alignment
In light of these challenges, Abegide revealed his intention to align with initiatives resonating with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “New Hope” agenda. While he did not specify which political parties he might join, he hinted at ongoing discussions with like-minded leaders. His determination to pursue a platform that promises stability and efficacy remains paramount.
Maintaining Integrity Amidst Transitions
Despite his resignation, Abegide conveyed goodwill toward the existing ADC leadership and clarified that his departure was voluntary, contrary to reports suggesting expulsion. “I voluntarily left the ADC in compliance with the party’s constitution,” he assured his supporters, maintaining that his political framework remains intact and prepared for future endeavors. He concluded by expressing gratitude to his supporters for their loyalty and trust throughout his political journey.
