Labor Party Announces Deputy Governor Candidate for 2027 Election
The Labor Party (LP) in Benue State has officially named Juliana Obetta as its candidate for deputy governor in the upcoming 2027 governorship election. This announcement follows the party’s earlier selection of Mathias Biyuan as the gubernatorial candidate, whose nomination received widespread approval last Saturday. The official submissions were made yesterday by Peter Agbese, the Federal Member of Parliament representing the Ado/Okpoku/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, at the party’s state secretariat in Makurdi.
Party Leadership Engages Voters Ahead of Election
In a press conference following the nominations, Biyuan expressed his commitment to serve the people of Benue, stating that residents had encouraged him to follow in the footsteps of Governor Hyacinth Aria. He called on citizens to participate actively in the upcoming election and to lend their support to the Labor Party. Biyuan assured voters that, if elected, he would focus on transforming Benue from a predominantly civil service state to a robust industrial hub.
Economic Commitment to Youth Employment
Biyuan also highlighted the financial support provided by President Bola Tinubu to Benue State, while expressing concern over the lack of visible results. “I aspire to be a governor dedicated to our region. My approach will prioritize local investments over sending funds to Abuja. My focus is on creating job opportunities for our youth,” he stated.
Plans for Educational Reform
In his vision for education, Biyuan committed to ensuring that 60 percent of schools in Benue offer free education, alleviating the financial burden on families who often struggle to pay school fees. He pointed out the dire economic conditions many families face, where selling livestock or produce becomes essential just to cover educational costs.
Advocacy for Women’s Representation
Biyuan emphasized the importance of selecting a deputy who resonates with the electorate. He chose Juliana Obetta, a local politician, to ensure that women have a voice in governance. “This decision reflects our commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women in our state,” he stated.
Obetta’s Vision for Women in Government
Juliana Obetta expressed her gratitude upon accepting the nomination, recognizing it as a significant step for women in Benue. Her background includes serving as the first female chairperson of the Okpoku Local Government Council from 2012 to 2014 and as a three-time women’s campaign manager for the state. She has also been a member of President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign council.
A Call to Women Voters
“I accept this nomination with an open heart,” Obetta said. “This is a victory for all women in Benue. Women constitute more than 80 percent of the voting demographic, and we deserve to be represented.” She further underscored the need for women’s ongoing involvement in politics, stressing that their voices are often overlooked after elections. Obetta vowed to work alongside the future first lady, Mrs. Mathias Biyuan, to ensure women’s advocacy within the government and aim for greater representation.
Support from Party Leadership
William Okefu, the state chairman of the Labor Party, also acknowledged the backing of the party’s national chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman. He affirmed that under Biyuan’s leadership, Benue State has the potential to thrive and improve significantly.
