Launch of AI Initiative in Lagos
The Artificial Future, a comprehensive AI initiative by Young People in Tech (YPIT), is set to launch in Lagos this May, featuring a hackathon for 250 innovators, a global webinar series, and a high-profile conference scheduled for June 13th.
Introducing The Artificial Future Program
Founded in 2022, YPIT is a global community based in Lagos that has unveiled The Artificial Future, its flagship AI initiative designed to span both in-person and online activities from May to June 2026.
Addressing the AI Ecosystem Challenges
This new program emerges from YPIT’s in-depth exploration of Nigeria’s developing AI landscape over the past year. Engaging with engineers, researchers, founders, and practitioners, YPIT identified an enthusiastic and growing community not just utilizing AI technologies but also actively building them. These efforts include the creation of datasets in African languages, training speech recognition models using African voices, and developing AI applications specifically tailored for African skin tones and clinical settings. While these clusters are indeed significant, they remain relatively small.
Program Content Overview
The Artificial Future will comprise various components, including a six-week series of webinars and workshops. These free sessions, hosted by AI practitioners, will be available globally from April to June 2026.
A key aspect of the program is the AI Hackathon, which will be conducted in both virtual and physical formats over two weeks. Starting from May 30 to June 6, this event aims to unite 50 teams and over 250 participants to collaboratively create AI solutions under the guidance of experienced professionals. Top teams will earn a place in YPIT’s Launchpad program.
Convergence of Industry Leaders at AF Conference
The AF Conference, taking place on June 13, 2026, at the Lagos Civic Center, promises a full day of keynotes, panel discussions, exhibitions, and a demo day showcasing hackathon projects. Anticipated attendees include around 1,000 founders, investors, policymakers, students, researchers, and industry leaders.
Focusing on Relevant Challenges
Structured around four key themes—Economic Access, Local Languages and Cultures, Education, and Healthcare—the hackathon and conference aim to tackle applied AI challenges that the African ecosystem is already addressing. Additionally, there will be a non-technical track dedicated to storytelling in African languages.
Addressing Accessibility Issues in AI Development
According to TechCabal’s State of Tech in Africa 2025 report, less than 5% of African AI talent has sufficient access to the GPU power essential for large-scale development projects. While organizations like TriAI have fostered a community of serious builders through their extensive curriculum, the limitations of smaller clusters remain evident.
YPIT co-founder Daniel Adewunmi emphasized the urgency of these efforts: “AI solutions that will shape the future of healthcare, finance, and language in Africa are currently being developed. However, they are often created by individuals unfamiliar with the continent’s unique challenges. The Artificial Future aims to shift this dynamic by promoting local builders and fostering homegrown talent.”
Partnerships Supporting the Initiative
The Artificial Future has garnered the support of notable partners, including Paystack, Cencori, PyData Lagos, African Fintech Foundry, Remostart, TriAI, Enyata Community, and Data Science Nigeria.
