Lagos State Government Advances Biogas and Biomethane Production
The Lagos State Government is taking significant steps towards the commercial production of biogas and biomethane. This initiative is part of the state’s broader strategy to lessen reliance on imported fuels and foster a cleaner environmental landscape.
Formation of a Technical Committee
To facilitate this endeavor, state officials have established a technical committee that includes various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). This collaborative approach aims to streamline operations and ensure effective execution of the biogas and biomethane project.
Feasibility Studies Highlight Potential Benefits
During the recent cabinet press conference celebrating the seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, State Commissioner for Transport Oluwasun Oshiyemi revealed that feasibility studies underscore the viability of biogas and biomethane as cost-effective alternatives to diesel. He noted that Lagos generates approximately 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, with 45 percent of it composed of organic materials suitable for local biomethane fuel production.
Driving Environmental Sustainability Initiatives
Oshiyemi emphasized the Lagos government’s commitment to environmental sustainability by implementing various programs aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Notable initiatives include converting 152 first-mile and last-mile buses from gasoline to compressed natural gas (CNG), the development of a comprehensive seven-line electric rail network, and a gradual transition from diesel to cleaner energy sources like CNG, electricity, and biogas in public transport systems.
Impact of CNG Buses
Since their introduction in 2022, the CNG buses have successfully transported over 600,000 passengers while achieving fuel cost reductions of up to 50 percent. Additionally, two electric buses that were deployed on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes completed a successful 90-day testing phase, carrying more than 150,000 passengers and contributing to a reduction of around 200,000 kilograms in carbon dioxide emissions.
Partnerships for Cleaner Transport Solutions
In collaboration with the African Union Bank, the Lagos government is further advancing its green transport agenda by introducing 2,000 CNG-fueled trucks as part of its transport reform program. This initiative aims to phase out older, less safe trucks known for contributing to traffic congestion and accidents, promoting safer and cleaner transportation alternatives throughout the state.
Conferences and Programs Supporting Sustainable Mobility
The Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority recently hosted a sustainability conference themed “Leveraging Clean Urban Transport Innovation and Investment in Africa.” This event brought together various stakeholders, including cities across Africa and development partners, to exchange ideas on fostering cleaner and more sustainable transport systems. It reinforced Lagos’s status as a leader in sustainable urban transport within the continent.
Encouraging Cleaner Transportation Innovations
Oshiyemi also highlighted initiatives such as the E1 Sports Series and EcoMove Lagos, which aim to stimulate innovation in water transportation and enhance smart mobility options in the region. Furthermore, there has been a noticeable increase in the registration of electric vehicles and CNG-powered vehicles in the e-hailing sector, further bolstering efforts for cleaner transportation across Lagos.
