The Lagos State Government has allocated NOK 1.4 billion for the registration of 45,598 students to participate in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Impressively, 61.52% of those candidates achieved credits in five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
Education Secretary Highlights Financial Support Initiatives
During the ongoing 2026 Cabinet Press Conference, Jamiu Ali-Balogun, Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education, disclosed these statistics as part of the celebrations marking the third anniversary of Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term. Ali-Balogun emphasized that this investment is aimed at dismantling financial barriers that hinder students from accessing quality education.
Impact of Strategic Educational Reforms
According to Ali-Balogun, the notable improvement in the 2025 examination results underscores the positive impact of the strategic educational reforms and targeted learning interventions implemented by the Sanwo-Olu administration. He mentioned the Eko Learner Support Initiative, launched in January 2025, which aims to address educational disparities and provide equitable opportunities for success among Lagos students.
Enhancing Learning Resources and Digital Access
The results of the 2025 WASSCE, where 61.52% of students achieved five credits, reflect the government’s efforts to enhance educational performance. Initiatives such as the distribution of essential textbooks in mathematics and English, along with the introduction of smart learning devices in March 2026, have significantly contributed to this achievement.
Innovative Teaching Tools and Classroom Engagement
Furthermore, the government rolled out a state-of-the-art digital hub for teachers in January 2026, enabling live-streaming of educational content to schools across Lagos. This initiative ensures that teachers and students have equal access to high-quality educational materials. The ministry also organized educational film shows and showcased digital animations to make classroom learning more interactive and engaging.
Increasing School Enrollment and Infrastructure Development
The government’s commitment to enhancing education is evident as it strives to integrate more children, particularly from underserved communities, into the school system. A total of 4,539 candidates applied for admission to model universities and upgraded secondary schools, with 3,024 securing provisional admission, resulting in a successful admission rate of 66.62%.
Infrastructure Investments and Health Interventions
Ali-Balogun also reported that 11,727 students have been transferred to public junior high school II and senior high school I classes. The government has constructed or renovated 15 schools in hard-to-reach areas and is actively working to alleviate overcrowding by introducing modular classrooms. In total, the state has supplied over 223,000 ergonomic furniture units and has undertaken the construction of multiple new classroom blocks to enhance the learning environment. Additionally, 37 non-governmental organizations have been authorized to implement healthcare and educational innovation programs, with 18,122 girls across six districts receiving HPV vaccinations under the ongoing school health intervention program.
