The Launch of The Artificial Future in Lagos
The Artificial Future, an ambitious initiative by Young People in Tech (YPIT), is set to kick off in Lagos this May. This multifaceted program features a hackathon aimed at 250 developers, a global webinar series, and a conference scheduled for June 13, bringing together investors, founders, and policymakers.
YPIT’s Flagship AI Program
Established in Lagos in 2022, Young People in Tech (YPIT) is launching The Artificial Future, its premier AI initiative, which will run from May to June 2026. The program aims to solidify YPIT’s commitment to fostering an innovative AI ecosystem in Nigeria, both in-person and virtually.
Responding to Nigeria’s Growing AI Ecosystem
This initiative is a response to YPIT’s year-long exploration of Nigeria’s emerging AI landscape. Through discussions with engineers, researchers, founders, and AI practitioners, YPIT found an increasing group of innovators focused on developing AI tailored to the African context. This includes creating datasets in local languages, training speech recognition systems with African voices, and designing AI suited for local clinical practices.
Program Highlights
The program includes various components aimed at engaging participants and fostering collaboration. It features a free online webinar and workshop series delivering six weeks of sessions led by AI experts. Running from April to June 2026, these sessions will be accessible to a global audience. Additionally, the AI Hackathon will occur from May 30 to June 6, allowing 50 teams and over 250 developers to collaborate on constructing AI solutions with guidance from seasoned practitioners. Successful teams will gain entry into YPIT’s Launchpad program.
A Day of Innovation at the AF Conference
The Artificial Future Conference, slated for June 13 at the Lagos Civic Center, promises a full day of engaging activities. The event will feature influential keynote speakers, dynamic panel discussions, exhibitions, and a hackathon demo day, with expected attendance of around 1,000 stakeholders, including founders, investors, students, and policymakers. The hackathon and conference will focus on four critical tracks: Economic Access, Local Languages and Cultures, Education, and Healthcare, each highlighting the applied AI challenges Africa is already addressing. An additional non-technical track will showcase narratives in African languages.
Addressing the Skills Gap in African AI Development
According to TechCabal’s State of Tech in Africa 2025 report, less than 5% of African AI talent has access to the critical GPU resources required for comprehensive development. While communities like TriAI have fostered clusters of AI builders, individual initiatives have their limitations. YPIT co-founder Daniel Adewunmi emphasized the urgency of cultivating local talent, stating that AI solutions benefiting Africa’s healthcare, finance, and languages are being developed, often by individuals unfamiliar with the continent’s unique challenges. The Artificial Future aims to empower local builders who understand these issues to lead the charge in AI development.
Collaboration and Partnerships
The Artificial Future initiative is backed by several prominent partners, including Paystack, Cencori, PyData Lagos, the African Fintech Foundry, Remostart, TriAI, Enyata Community, and Data Science Nigeria. This collaboration underscores the importance of a unified approach to advancing AI solutions that are contextually relevant and impactful.
