As the rainy season intensifies in Lagos State, many residents are increasingly favoring nylon raincoats over traditional umbrellas for their practicality and affordability. This shift in preferences is particularly noticeable among motorcyclists, school children, traders, civil servants, commuters, and other urban dwellers.
Economic Factors Influencing Choices
Interviews conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria reveal that many individuals are turning to more cost-effective solutions to shield themselves from the rain. Adedipe Muhamed, a civil servant, highlighted that raincoats offer superior coverage compared to umbrellas and eliminate the inconvenience of carrying additional items. He also noted that raincoats are generally more affordable than even the cheapest umbrellas, making them an attractive alternative.
Convenience and Comfort Take Center Stage
According to Muhamed, using a raincoat not only alleviates stress but is also cost-efficient. Joshua Okoh, an undergraduate residing in Ojo Barracks, echoed these sentiments, explaining that umbrellas often become cumbersome during frequent moves around the city. “It’s easier to wear a raincoat. You can just put it on and be on your way,” he stated, emphasizing how a raincoat allows for greater mobility while providing enhanced protection.
Affordability and Versatility of Raincoats
Okoh further elaborated on the pricing of raincoats, stating that lighter models range from ₦500 to ₦1,000, whereas thicker options can cost between ₦2,500 and ₦3,000. He appreciates wearing a raincoat for its practicality, especially during heavy downpours. Many people have embraced raincoats over umbrellas because they are not only cheaper but also less cumbersome during rainy weather.
Preference for Better Coverage
Store owner Abdullatif Halifax, who sells frozen foods in Iyana Ipaja, remarked on the raincoat’s ability to provide improved coverage, noting that umbrellas often leave the lower body exposed. “Raincoats are indeed cheaper than umbrellas, which makes them my go-to option for weather protection,” Halifax stated. Ibrahim Sulaiman, a phone repairman at Computer Village in Ikeja, agreed, pointing out that nylon raincoats have become increasingly accessible as umbrella prices continue to rise.
Changing Perceptions of Raincoats
Blessing Addo, a vendor of carbonated drinks in Apapa, shared that she prefers nylon raincoats for their portability—it’s easy to fold them and fit them into a handbag. She observed that raincoats were once primarily associated with lower-income groups, but today, even bankers and civil servants in formal attire are adopting them as acceptable, convenient outerwear.
