Norris Reflects on Narrow Defeat at Miami Grand Prix
Lando Norris expressed his belief that McLaren squandered a chance for their first Grand Prix victory of the season in Miami, ultimately finishing behind Kimi Antonelli. During the pivotal pit stop, Norris held a lead of nearly two seconds over Antonelli, but Mercedes opted to pit their drivers first. This strategic move allowed Antonelli to gain traction on fresher tires, shifting the race dynamic.
When Norris returned to the track, he briefly emerged ahead of Antonelli, but the Italian teenager swiftly seized the net lead as they approached turn four. If Antonelli can maintain this momentum, he will achieve a hat-trick of wins and widen his lead in the drivers’ championship to 20 points over George Russell.
Norris crossed the finish line three seconds behind Antonelli, questioning, “Why didn’t I win? We should have performed better.” He acknowledged the Mercedes team’s execution, stating, “They ran a good race, and we were undercut. We should have boxed first.” Despite his disappointment, he noted the overall positive performance from McLaren during the weekend.
McLaren’s Upgrade Package and Competitive Edge
McLaren introduced a significant upgrade package ahead of the Miami race, demonstrating enhanced speed, particularly during the sprint event where Norris converted pole position into a win. In the Sunday race, while Norris qualified fourth, he managed to overtake both Charles Leclerc and Antonelli in the initial laps to take the lead.
However, Norris recognized the possibility that even with the best strategy, Antonelli might have had the pace to surpass him. He expressed a desire to understand why the team did not adopt a more aggressive approach, acknowledging, “I should have boxed sooner. We need to examine our decisions closely; we could have fought for the win more effectively.”
Team Principal’s Perspective on Missed Opportunities
Andrea Stella, McLaren’s team principal, remarked on the squad’s missed opportunity, asserting, “We had a 100 percent chance to win.” He explained that they were being chased by faster cars while also monitoring weather conditions. Antonelli’s superb out-lap during the pit stop marked a turning point, as McLaren struggled to match his performance on the in-lap.
Despite the setback, Stella remained optimistic, stating, “We could have done better, but I’m very happy with the positives we take from this weekend. We are competitive again and have exciting upgrades lined up for the next race.”
Looking Ahead: McLaren’s Future in the Championship
The outcome in Miami has put McLaren further behind Mercedes in the constructors’ championship. With Oscar Piastri finishing in third place and George Russell in fourth, the Silver Arrows now hold a 68-point advantage over Ferrari and a staggering 86-point lead over McLaren. After a challenging start to the season that saw both drivers unable to finish in China, McLaren’s recent performances suggest they are back in the fight.
Stella emphasized, “We must not forget where we started. This season began on a difficult note, but we have adapted and improved.” Norris also highlighted the team’s progress, acknowledging, “Mercedes still holds some advantage, but it’s encouraging to be competitive again as the championship unfolds.” The next challenge awaits in Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix, where excitement is anticipated for both the race and sprint weekend.
