Fire officials are contending with an unusual situation where they have been unable to gain control over a valve on the industrial tank. Craig Covey, field commander of the Orange County Fire Department, indicated that experts nationwide have proposed various innovative solutions, some of which are being tested overnight to mitigate potential disasters.
Initial Evacuation Orders Prompted by Vapor Release
The evacuation orders were first instituted on Thursday following a “vapor release” incident at the manufacturing site. Although conditions initially appeared stable, complications arose on Friday when a valve malfunction rendered the tank unmanageable, according to the Orange County Fire Department.
Proactive Measures to Stabilize Tank Temperatures
Covey announced that emergency teams are preparing for two potential scenarios: either a system failure or an explosion. In a video update, he reported that a water spray system had successfully stabilized the tank temperatures, providing crucial time for implementing long-term solutions. Current efforts have led to a significant drop in temperatures, with expectations of reaching around 61 degrees by nightfall.
Health Risks from Methyl Methacrylate Exposure
The tank contains methyl methacrylate, a toxic chemical utilized in the production of resins and plastics, including plexiglass. Covey emphasized the risks associated with this substance. He and other officials have advised people living in the vicinity, which spans parts of Garden Grove, Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster, to remain vigilant.
State Response and Public Safety Precautions
In light of the emergency, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services has activated the state operations center to bolster local hazardous materials response efforts. Dr. Regina Cincio Kwon, Orange County’s health officer, described the event as unprecedented and expressed concerns regarding the unpredictable outcome. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cautions that methyl methacrylate can lead to various health issues, including respiratory and skin irritation.
Monitoring and Safety Measures Ongoing
Garden Grove Police Chief Amir Elfallah reported that the evacuation zone, encompassing around 40,000 individuals, remains under careful monitoring. The EPA is assisting local governments in air quality assessments, while the Orange County Fire Authority has taken the lead in response efforts. OCFA officials noted that they first responded to reports of vapor releases at approximately 3:22 p.m. on Thursday and later rescinded the evacuation order after cooling the tank. However, the loss of valve control necessitated re-evacuations on Friday.
